I remember the ads for those, too young to have been allowed to
ride a50 on l plates though :(. Was the 400 any good, one of
the things I recall was it was a chuffing heavy 250 and so
sloooow. The handling wasn't truly awful (I briefly owned a
kwaka 2stroke triple with what seemd to be a hinge in the middle
of the frame so my opinions might be a bit skewed on that point
though :eek:

Sounds like the widow maker kh500 but think they came in other
sizes too. Superdream 250 engines had a dodgy bushless cam shaft
set up that would eventually wear and cause the timing chain to
jump a tooth or five. Same engine as the xl250.
The sidewinder rule was crazy. It didn't exactly make the bike
handle better and yet allowed big bike/no test mentalists on the
roads. Someone who didn't know better must have thought it was a
stabiliser!

I have the Colway remould copy of the BF Goodridge AT pattern
and they would be my choice again,i know that Colway are no
longer available but i have seen 750x16 remould copys available.

I once dropped my 250 Superdream off the stand and couldn't pick
it up again - ok, I was an >8 stone weakling at that time (as
opposed to a 13 stone lump of lard now!) but that thing was
soooo heavy :eek:
Someone saw me struggling and came to help :haha:
I think I just broke one indicator and replaced it in about 10
minutes - I was parked outside the Honda garage at the time

The 400 wasn't a lot heavier so the power/weight ratio was
better and cruised along nicely; much better than the 250.
Still not as fast as the 2 strokes my mates had, but I hated to
hear those on idle - they sounded like a box of spanners being
thrown around in the crankcase whereas the 4 stokes rumbled
nicely.

In the recent 'winter' weather I found Pirelli Scorpion S/T's
excellent on compacted snow and ice. Not saying you should go
to that expense ( i didn't, I got a bit of a bargain on eblag)
but anything with a similar sort of pattern would be good.
Knobblies are rubbish on ice as already stated but for blasting
through snow drifts, maybe, plus some power and possibly chains.
;D
Horses for courses an' all that but some good A/T's will see you
right.
