I run Rangemasters cos I cant wear em out. Prone to punctures
due to tubes for series rims in tubeless tyres, crap in wet and
crap in snow. A big but they just do not seem to wear and I wont
change until they do.

I used to think like that back when I got my first bike (a
superdream in 250 flavour for those who recall those heeps of
shit) shod with cheap chinese tyres made of concrete. It lasted
right up to the first winter when I spent half the time falling
off the damn thing. Couldn't even kill the rear with massive
donuts and burnouts in the local pub car park although I did
make a hole in the tarmac ;D.
Swapped the tyres for some nice sticky ones if only so i could
keep the thing upright

General Grabber ATē work well for me. Used all the year round
and handle the Peak District lanes without problem.

Oh yes, that was my first 'big' bike at 17 (after a pocket
rocket SS50 at 16!) - those were the days - once you reached 17
you could ride a 250 on L plates without any test!
Then a few months later I got a SuperDream 400 (didn't learn my
lesson with the 250 :confused:) and stuck a 'sidewinder' on it
- a sort of skeleton sidecar which leaned with the bike - still
all on L plates with no test :smilewide:

The best winter tyres? Whatever you've already got on the motor!
I don't see any point in changing the tyres for the sake of a
couple of days playing in the snow. After all no one changes the
tyres on their car for the road so a Land Rover is going to cope
regardless.
I have Goodyear G90s. They are good enough in any conditions,
road or off-road. It's a Land Rover, not a sports car FFS.

Winter tyres are different to snow tyres Dave. It's down to how
the compound copes with the temperature changes.

I'm aware of that, Jim, but I can't see the point in buying a
set of tyres and changing them and back again for the sake of
the few weeks of snow that we get in this country.
OK so it's cold in the winter even when there's no snow but I
can't imagine these winter tyres give a significant advantage.
I've got ordinary tyres on the van and I've driven thousands of
miles on them this winter without incident. If I hit ice then no
tyre in the world is going to grip and if I hit properly deep
snow then I'm still going to get stuck regardless of the tyre
compound.
As for the Land Rover it wears G90s all year round.

Have I ever told anybody about the clawing power of the Avon
Ranger A-T in 205 size, with a particular hill on the Yorkshire
section of the Camel Trophy being the global stage on-which they
performed with peerless ability?
