^^^ exactly what Jim says, if you look at the Michey tyre guide
the XPC is shown as top fitment for snow (and tarmac). Can't say
the 88 struggles at all with the big 255/85R16 BFG MTs on it but
that's not to say the XPCs wouldn't be superior.

On the subject of Avons when I purchased a brand new Gaybender
110 back in 2000 it had Avon Rangemasters fitted from new. I had
vibration issues and took it to a mate's tyre place and he tried
everything to get them to balance including a plate balance. No
chance. The new Mich XCLs I had on the original '66 rims on FMW
balanced first time. His guv reckoned Avon carcasses were
absolute shite. I've never gone near them since. It doesn't help
that the Rangemaster is pretty much crap on road and off it,
dreadful tyre IMHO.

Now they might suit my Dormi purposes Jim, how much do the
7.50's retail at?... I have a set of these on one of the 88" in
summer and like them on tarmac, never used them off-road though
as I switched to MT's in winter...

I ussed Pirelli ATs in the past they were really good in snow,
and to be honest just about everywhere else. Not the cheapest
option, but excellent value .
Now on BFGs good but the Pirellis werebetter on snow and ice.

Depends if you want to cut through or sit on top. 7.50's are
great but if it's 4foot deep.
Something very wide and a bit :haha: though somes does the
trick as I've seen landy's oop here that seem to ride on top of
the drifts.

I,m running Kumho AT in dinky 205x16 size and they have been
fine for me on the boingy one.

last year pulled out boinggy disco 2 foot of snow . i run
kingpin trecker diamond on my series 2a, remold and a good tyre
corners not bad too

Dan, they're standard fit to current boingies. You might be
lucky and bag a full set of brand new "take offs" for around the
£400 mark, on the rim. Where I work doesn't get the discounts
available to major outlets, so I buy my tyres elsewhere....
These are cheap at the mo, and near Penistone.... one of use
could collect and store for you if needed.

I'm considering getting a set of Kumho KC11 winter tyres for my
109" - I'll stick them on a set of tubeless Wolf rims and swap
between them and the General Grabber TRs I've currently got
fitted as the seasons change 'round.
Dedicated winter rubber in 235/85 x 16 seems a little thin on
the ground. My wife's 2WD Skoda Yeti on Falken Eurowinters is
more stable and composed on icy roads than the 109" is in 4WD. I
have to drive 16 miles down "A" roads whatever the weather to
get to work, I'm not in the least bothered if they're poor
off-road, it's icy on-road performance I'm after.
My General Grabbers aren't as good in the cold/wet/snow as the
Goodyear Wrangler AT/Rs they've replaced, but they were cheap.
The best tyres I've had on the Landy for snow over the years
were remoulded called Olympic Bandits. They were cheap too, but
they did wear quickly. They haven't been available for years
though, which is a shame.
Chains are OK, I've used them extensively in Europe in the past
but they're really for snow covered roads only. They soon shag
themselves on clear Tarmac, and I'm buggered if I'm going to
take the damn things on and off two or three times each way to
work and back in the early hours of the morning!
It does surprise me that lots of 4WD owners dismiss winter
rubber as unnecessary. Poor tyre choice off-roading has such an
impact on vehicle ability, and nobody with any experience
questions the sense of picking "horses for courses" as in M/Ts
for heavy off-road stuff and A/Ts for mainly on-road; and that a
degree of compromise must be struck because no one tyre can do
everything. I accept that cost comes into the equation, and the
price of four tyres at once can be hard to raise, but whilst
your summer tyres are in the shed, they're not wearing out, and
over the whole life of both sets of tyres the only real cost is
the second set of rims...
All IMHO of course.

Cheers Jim, I have them on watch, a good friend works at the LR
dealer in Carlisle, I asked him to keep an eye out for
take-off's a while ago, but nothing as yet.... Mainly as
defenders generally still get sold to Farmers in these parts
and they don't take-off :haha:

It you had an 88, then SLTs were and are the best in my opinion.
Carlsen won lots of world rally races using dead narrow tyres.
They work for me
the dormobile is shod with xzy and I couldn't get it off my
drive . great for road though and hardly wear out
so swb - SLTs
lwb - chains (ish)
