Best winter tyres??

Well.
The avon strange bastards I have on the landy aren't the best..
Looking to buy a set of modular wheels and budget tyres.. Any
recommendations as to best size and makes...Also what wheels to
go for?? As much as i would like to find some reasonable 1 ton
rims The money being asked at the mo is pretty stupid.
Any Ideas for doing on a budget or good suppliers?? I will use
the strange bastards in the summer months for plodding back and
forward to the tip!!

Dragged it back to about 1 mile from home with a big john deere
tractor this morning..Wind drifts have been hellish

Now that is snow. I can't see your location - where is that? I
have a set of General AT tyres - great in the mud completely
shit on Ice or compacted snow.

I read up on this when I needed winter tyres for my van -
apparently big chunky treads are the worst for driving in
compacted snow.
Winter tyres have lots of snipes (sp?) - tiny slits in the
rubber - and it's those which give the best grip on compacted
snow and ice.
Also, they are a softer tyre which means they remain more
flexible at low temperatures, but also means they wear faster in
the summer!
I can't recommend any in Landy size though, my Berlingo takes
dinky 14" tyres and I got Winter Tact remoulds for it.

Surely if you want decent tyres for snow you want to be looking
at narrow tyres not wider tyres or rims?

if its JUST for snow then why not buy chains? I have invested
in a set for cac this year & its made her much better on the
white stuff, just remember to take the off again when you get
to clear roads, ( not that you can forget they are there due to
the noise

2nd vote for chains, though I need to invest in a new set as
mine are kinda knackered after offroad abuse.

I think Chains are a good idea but the rangemasters are lethal
on most surfaces. I think for tight farmers the mileages offered
are great but I am not keen at all for them to stay on the landy
I probably need an AT pattern but would like some sipes in the
tread to give better grip. When it snows here it snows (near
allenheads 440m up) MT's are borbably best at clawing itself
around in tractor treads which is what tends to happen up in
these parts but less able on compacted snow.
The general TR's on my old defender were pretty good all round
but don't look like a leafer tyre!!
Decisions decisions !!

Chains for a third time, i would recommend tyres that will suit
the majority of your driving and fit chains when the white stuff
comes down, this would be cheaper in the long run as winter
tyres are great but do wear fast due to soft compounds used and
will never be as good as mud tyres if you feel the need to hoon
it up.
AT type tyres would be my first choice something like the BF
Goodrich AT or the tracedge both of which are available as
remoulds then look on the bay for a set of chains to fit, I
found a pair to fit 7.50r16's for about £40, bought two set and
haven't been stuck yet.

Anyone used studs ? I've looked about and can't even see any
advertised except for mountain bike tyres. I've a set of old
Kumho remoulds in the shed that are drilled for studs and was
thinking about having them as a spare set for when it really
gets bad. Two winters ago I had them set up with the chains and
just swapped wheels about as it was less hassle than stripping
the chains on/off every few days.

I sell tyres for a living. I wouldn't have Strange Bastards
anywhere near my motors. Dreadful shit.
For snow, a pattern like this is one of the better standard
7.50s. Michelin XPC.
