drain plug on series III diff housing

I'm new to the forum, and to land rovers in general. Have a 72
series 3 and having a hard time removing the odd sloted drain
plug in the diff housing. Any tips?

Welcome along,
Have you tried the usual method of (failing to have the correct
Landrover tool to hand) a decent sized spanner used with the
"flat" of the bit that fit's around a nut into the slot in the
drain plug ??

Glad to be here. Series Land Rovers are very scarce around here,
I've only ever seen 3, I've brought this one back from the brink
of death. Absolutely love this vehicle and have a grocery list
of parts on order to keep improving it.
The plugs must be badly seized, used a blunt chisel welded to a
socket with breaker bar. Last person to service the diff must
have gotten carried away.
In that case I'll have to drill it out/extract. Am I right in
assuming that it's pipe thread (NPT)? If so it would be handy to
know the size so have new plugs for after I destroy the old
ones.

Have you tried heating it? Blowtorch or Oxy-Ace gas welding kit.

The hot wrench will surely be part of the equation. Would like
to do away with those funky plugs all together, 1/2" npt?

Can you hold a nut over the plug and weld it on through the
thread, the heat will help loosen it and then you can get better
leverage on the nut?

Those slotted drain plugs are shite, I use a pair of vise grips
on the largest flat head screwdriver I can find. The better type
are the hex head with square cutout for a ratchet. Military
vehicles had these fitted and life is much easier. Rovers Down
South have a stock of them:

Part number 540870 (supercedes 241110). The definition in the
military manual is "PLUG, SCREWED, Whit form, brass, hex hd,
1-1/8 in-16 tpi x 11/32 in lg" so Whitworth thread I assume.
These are a direct replacement for 235592, the shite slot type.

Welcome to the forum by the way. I've got a '66 109 ambulance in
Idaho and one of my best mates emigrated to Canada a couple of
years ago. He's a cop in Calgary now. :o I must get round to a
"road trip" before too much longer.

I made a tool that fits snuggly into the slot and has a long
handle to crack them undone. Easy enough to make if you have a
welder and some scrap about!
