A biblically good engine. Providing the donor isn't a nail.
There was a chap on the old forum that had a 1.4tdi in an 80" I
       think.

They are a great engine. Beware the multiple variations though,
they come in a bewildering range of specs and outputs - recent
units are all electronic, which may or may not put you off.
       Downsides I can think of:
You need an adaptor for the gearbox, mounts etc and will have to
maybe machine the flywheel for a series clutch.
I don't think the cambelt is protected enough for serious
       off-roading.
Loads of power and torque when on boost, absolutely fuck all off
boost - will make it a bit tiresome to drive in a heavy series.
       Particularly towing.
They're cheap to buy, but not to rebuild, and they do have their
Achilles heels - oil pumps and associated drives are a known
       weak point.
If you have an engine already, plenty of time, patience and
enjoy a challenge, then it probably won't end up an undrivable
horror story; but all the while there are TDi engines about I
       really can't see the point.

       Volkswagon/Audi did a 2.6 turbo diesel (I think), wasn't it an
option on the old Audi A6..?
Perhaps that would be a better option for a VW-TDI series motor.
       More torque n' that.
       ...?

Sounds an interesting project, and actually one I was pondering
       myself the other day.
Not sure about the comment above about having no power "off
       boost".
I used to have a Mk3 golf TDI with the 90hp engine.
It would pull happily from 30mph in 5th gear, with few
complaints. Had a Passat with the 130hp version, and it was a
       flyer.
Other option, in a similar vain, would be to put in one of the
Peugeot XUD Turbo engines. Again a few different HP outputs,
but rock solid engines, as long as you don't go wading in deep.
Or maybe one of the 2.5's as fitted in the Audi A6 & A8's
       Keep us posted.

Has anyone tried a BMW p38 engine? My missus had a 325tds which
although the car itself was a tank, very heavy and not a
generally nice car to drive, the engine was a beast. Plenty of
torque through out the rev range and pull the side of a house
down. It died at over 200000 miles, but only because the cam
chain tensioner gave out. And for a bonus its in line. The
problem would be to get rid of the electrickery!
