LT77 ...Hexpurts drag up a chair,we may be here for some time

Long story short (yehh right !!!!)
On the way back from our Xmas break up in Kirkoswald,Towing the
Maggot back the gearbox in "Molly" expired @10 miles from shore
...BUGGER !!!! On the upside we managed to limp home with just
1st and 4th for company ...and a heap of noise from any of the
others .
Now for the science bit ....
The existing box is a 50A0067737D (reads as a long stick LT77
according to Ashcrofts )
The replacement i picked up a while back is a 56A0174631H (Reads
as a LT77S Long stick (Defender of the strongest flavour with
double syncro cones)
HOWEVER the replacement has no change mechanism fitted/Transfer
box, AND two holes seems to be lacking to affix the Diff lock
select mechanism to (There is a casting there just no holes )
Question is why ???
Was the box available without diff lock OR is it a strange
oddball (Knowing my luck not in a good way )
And more importantly is the rest of stuff the same I.E. can i
drill and tap the holes and swap transfer box/linkages over etc

hhm well from my 3.9 perkins 110 lt77 destroying days i know
this. the lt77s has bigger bearing cos i ruined an lt77. and a
disco possibly 2 assuming it had the lt77 of some variety did
not come with diff lock although it was possible to add it simce
just the levers etc were missing, think there was a kit
available to do it.
Maybe its a disco box converted or rebuilt because they are
pretty different i think.
anyway serves you right since series boxes are simple and way
kooler ( says the man currently rebuilding one cos his is a bit
fucked) ::)

I'm reasonably sure the selector units for the long-stick boxes
are all interchangeable - they are all held down by just 4 bolts
to the main casing.
I'm not clear which holes you think are missing for the
diff-lock selector - a picture may be worth a great many words
at this point.
It would probably be prudent to fit a cross-drilled gear to to
transferbox input, as then if the new mainbox has a good
mainshaft it will stay that way - nothing like using worn
transfer input gears to destroy the mainshaft output splines. A
new gear is about £70 from Ashcrofts, or can be pillaged from a
R380 equiped motor with a suitable ratio transferbox (not sure
what transfer ratio your running)

Like John says, where is the diff lock selection gubbins
missing?
IIRC (and that first I is a big IF) Ashcrofts will probably be
able to tell you which of the Disco II's TRANSFER BOX had the
difflock not connected (but available) and which ones had the
casings blanked off. They would however have all been bolted to
an R380 (or ZF auto) - are you certain the xfer box and LT77
originally existed together?

Ian i just happen to have a very gay R380 transfer box. Yours if
you want/need it. Its in a mates garage let me know if you want
me to dig it out and take rude photos of it or owt.

In this picture ...circled is the bracket bit that acts as the
pivot for the diff lock actuator

Forgot to take a picture of the "spare box" BUT in the same
location it just has a undrilled/tapped boss so no facility for
the pivot bracket to bolt on ???

Ah so it's on the main box itself. There are two types of
linkage available there; one with a pivoty bit and one without
and they are completely different.

So i can't just drill and tap the boss and transfer the linkage
across then ??

Probably can, I think those extension cases are the same for
most of the 56A tdi boxes and the ones that went before. If it
was mine I would try it.
When I said completely different I meant the linkages were, so
you'd have to track down a fair few bits to change it - drilling
and tapping the casing will be far quicker and easier.

Thinking about it ...the Spare box has a bolt with an eye in the
end of it ...part of the other style actuator assembly i guess.
Possibly worth while when i get both boxes on the ground
swapping the actuator over loosely and seeing if
everything/anything lines up :smilewide:
