Running on two cylinders

Well since building my trialler I've been busy out playing and
also purchased another well known trialler from this very forum,
thanks Phil :thumbs: only took me 2 days to travel the 340
miles back home ::) but that's another story for another forum
due to :rolleye0012: Land Rover air suspension problem
:haha:
Anyway, I noticed lately that my 2.25 petrol engine has been
misfiring under load and as from today was only running on two
cylinders, so it was time to have a look. Well I've been through
the electronic ignition and there's nothing wrong with the
electrical side of things, big healthy sparks on all four
cylinders, but when I take number 3 and 4 lead off there's no
difference to the engine running. Also when the engine is revved
up there seems to be a popping sound coming from the air filter.
Water and oils are fine but my thoughts are that the head gasket
has gone, is there any way to tell as I don't have a compression
tester. Any advice from you knowledgeable bunch of guys would be
more than welcome before I take the head off for a look, thanks.

I agree with your diagnosis
COmpression testers are cheap, only about £20
failing 3-4 seems quite common
Otherwise, take the head off and look - only a few hrs work to
be back up running so probably not worth the effort of going to
get the tester

If compression is low on two adjacent cylinders, then head
gasket is a given. Whip it off, 7 quid for a gasket, and
Robert's your Mother's brother.

Deffo the cyl head gasket.
Had exactly the same with The Shed. One afternoon, and all done.
Just wish I hadn't been ripped off paying £20 for a shitpart
gasket...

Now better
£10.75 for a shtpart gasket set (still ripped of though!)

Yup as said above they're prone between cylinder 3 and 4.
Was worried for a second there it was my old 5 bearing in that
trialer that was running on 2. That said there's clearly tuning
carb wise to be done on my old girl post clean fuel tank......

Wip head off and do valve seats and stem seals at the same time
then do the timing. Did a friends and it was much better on fuel
to.

Well took head off tonight and you lot were right, gone between
cylinders 3 and 4. Think it went due to me not re-tightening the
head bolts after running in. :haha:
Another cheap gasket it is then.

Looks like its going between 2 and 3 as well, I'd check for
flatness across and along the head while it's off.
