Recommendations for TDi conversion

Hello,
I have rebuilt Lola my 1974 petrol SWB and she is now my daily
vehicle - luckily only doing about 20miles or so each day to
work and back. Sadly I have been plagued with a number of minor
issues, mainly fuel delivery and ignition I think, like the
awful kangarooing she does occasionally when it is colder
weather (like this morning when she idled perfectly well but
lost all power, kangarood and died repeatedly until after I had
stopped and let her warm up at the idle for 10 minutes) and that
coupled with the huge amount of engine oil she uses and the
difference in MPG has persuaded me that a TDi conversion is in
order.
Having researched lots and lots I decided that I am better
paying a mechanic / garage to do the installation for me as I do
not have the experience, competence, resources or time available
to do it in one short go. I found Glencoyne 4x4 website to be
hugely informative and through this I have decided that a 300 Di
(TDi minus turbo, intercooler etc) is the best bet for me (and
if the performance is too flat it leaves me the ability to fit
the turbo etc in the future).
Sadly Richard at Glencoyne hasn't replied to my email nor my
Facebook message and so I need to find another reputable
professional who is experienced in fitting the 200 / 300 TDi
into a petrol Series.
So ... unless I am breaking rules by inviting commercial
recommendations ... does anyone have any suggestions? I live in
Abergavenny, South Wales but would be happy to travel and then
leave the vehicle for a few days if necessary.
Thanks, Tim

Why not try phoning Richard instead? He's a busy man and
probably doesn't get much time to check facebook etc.
His number is on the website.

Thanks, thats a good idea. To be honest, not knowing Richard and
not having any recommendations towards him, I was a bit wary of
chasing someone who doesnt appear to want business. Im certainly
not accusing Richard but I have made the mistake in the past and
found that people who are hard to contact before money has
passed hands are often impossible to contact if things require
it afterwards.
You make a fair point though and I will ring him tomorrow.
I would still be interested in any other recommendations which
are perhaps a little closer to home for me. Thanks

Just another thought, and only suggesting it after using one
myself everyday after rolling my tdi 90, what about a 2.5 n/a
and 3.54 diffs? simpler to fit as theres no intercooler and
turbo to connect up or oil cooler too, just another idea mind

Try PM'ing Landyboy on here- see if he is interested in doing a
job in Wales?
Loads of Tdi's done in the forum gang now, heaps of experience.
If I was doing a 200 or 300 I would definately "T" it and
not....cop out.
Or you might as well just 2.5 N/A it like Lozza says

Another thought is sponsor an "OLLR cake eating/ brew/beer
drinking (Tdi fitting) weekend at yours :rolleye0012:
Your provide cake, beer , digs whatever, post up a few suitable
dates and see if you can gather a gang to descend and dig in....
It's been done plenty of times before

Thanks, more 'food for thought'!
I thought that the 200 / 300 Di would have more 'get up and go'
than the 2.5 NA whilst not needing to replace the original
radiator etc ... but it has been suggested that a Di would be
pretty flat performance and I figured if that was the case I
could then add the turbo etc. My main concern with the T is the
increased wear to UJs and gearbox.
LandyBoy seems an avenue worth pursuing (if I cannot speak to
Glencoyne) but a group gathering might be hard as we are
stripping the house in preparation to move and my only garage
space is at my parents ... if it comes to the crunch though I
might have to make a gathering work!
My wife doesnt think so but it became clear to me while sat on
the side of the road this morning that it does need doing sooner
than later but it also needs to be right first time as I have no
other way of getting to work ... and I cant wire a plug let
alone a diesel into a petrol loom!

I have done a quite a few DI conversions and have found the
performance more than adequate and the fuel economy a vast
improvement. I would do as you say and try it first without the
turbo as it is quicker to do this conversion first and upgrade
later if you so desire. I returned the last one to its owner and
he was very happy and said it was the most economical Land Rover
he had ever owned. The problem with the TDI and DI conversions
is cab noise so good soundproofing would be recomended.
