2286 petrol. Occassional slow cranking!

Morning!
I have a series 3 petrol. All standard.
Occassionally when starting it cranks very slowly but will
always start.
It isn't an issue but I want to sort it. I have cleaned the
earth strap and leads to the solenoid. The battery is only a
month or two old.
Any ideas?

The cold?! Mine has been doing the same over the last few weeks
... big battery, almost new, regularly Optimate charged

Personally I've found the standard earthing not up to scratch on
a series. I run an additional earth from the battery negative to
one of the distributor securing bolts to earth the engine
direct. The braided earths can degrade over time so you won't do
any harm replacing them either.

Hmmm...
On "The Shed", I have been finding turning over is often slow,
even when I know the battery is well charged. I have presumed it
is the started button which has dirty contacts, but perhaps it's
the earth?
So, I need to check the earth between the starter and battery
terminal?

My dad had a 2A that did it, it always started, just doesn't
seem right.
I have tried putting a jumplead from the block to the negative
terminal but it still did it it.

Don't rule out the lives either; just because you've cleaned the
end connections doesn't mean to say the rest of the cable is ok.
What happens if you put a jump lead from the starter fixing
bolt to battery earth and then one from the starter +ve
connection to the battery live (be careful)? It should crank
over mighty well if you do that, meaning the fault lies in your
cabling / earthing paths. If it is still iffy then your starter
needs investigation.

If the starter does merit looking at then I would suggest that
you first focus on the brushes. They can semi jam in their
holders (for which the cure is a bloody good clean) and/or they
wear to the point that the springs don't bear on them enough
(for which the cure is new brushes soldered in).

I seem to recall throwing all my toys out of the 88 when one
cold morning it barely turned over; turned out the bolt securing
the braided earth strap between the starter and the bulkhead
support bracket had gone
............................................................
just gone!

Mine often does a funny jerky turn over. Almost like its trying
to fire at completely the wrong time. But timing is fine and
runs well. Thought maybe the starter was loose and catching, but
its not. Anything else to look at?

Look at the condition of the teeth on the ring gear and starter
dog.
