This is the reason im messing about as i ve had series boxes
fitted to my tdi where you have to remove 2 studs and others
that wont fit on hardly any of them ( def not 6 pot boxes).
A 2.5td flywheel housing can be fitted and any series box will
fit on so the stud patterm nust have changed on the tdi...
excusing the extra bolts in the bottom of a disco tdi.
I have the normal disco housing.
Right il just rip my box out and have a play with the housings i
have, one will fit!
Mick il happily take the bellhousing! the seat runner idea has
gone though i think!

you need to tap some of the spre holes on disco tdi and move
studs and remove locating dowles

have been a pain! maybe it is a car one!

All IOEV bellhousings fit each other, as do all OHV units.
However. The earlier bellhousings have a smaller layshaft
bearing, and also have a left hand hole for the clutch release
(essentially a carry over from S1 production) Bunged on interim
boxes, and nonexistent on later boxes. There are perhaps three
or four different 2/2a release mechanisms, relative to age
mainly. The early ones were basically S1 units, the 1961-1966
units had a different way of preventing oil from escaping, then
came a sealed mechanism, (Around 1968ish) and there's also one
for the mythical synchro box. The numbering sequences for all
gearboxes after 1962/3 reverted to 251 for all OHV units, which
is why every used box one finds appears to be from a really late
petrol 109..... prior to this, gearboxes were numbered similar
to the Home Market RHD prefix of the destined vehicle. In order
to simplify supply and part numbers, the single type was used.
Rather like the 3BRG crank for spared was always the diesel
jobbie. I have 4 cylinder boxes numbered up to 254, and up to F
suffix. I also have a lightweight 236 box, and a NADA 6 cylinder
343 prefix box. Both dating from atound 1968/9.
So basically, if you have an A suffix box, you will likely need
an earlier bellhousing, B and C could be either, depending on
what has been done to it over the years, and D suffix on, a
later type. All due to layshaft type. I suggest measure
everything internally before buying parts. As for S3, who knows?
Who cares? :P

Good info that really useful. My good box is a suffix D...well
there is a D on it. My fitted box is much earlier i think as its
got an early clutch housing. Im guessing it will have a smaller
layshaft and therefore will not fit the later box.
So basically il need a later bellhousing!
I think il rebuild this early box and keep it original since it
seems well early! Now if all bellhousings have the same stud
pattern then there is one down the road i can use for my later
box im fitting.

Looked at the bellhousing and it's a 2/2a one not a 3 as first
thought. Still want it.

Right a standard 4 cyl housing has a hole at the top middle, the
one i ve been looking at today must be 6 cyl as it has two
offset holes at the top which i where i have got confused, it
could even be a series 1 type.

Now that has been established someone on S2C ( or on here? ) Was
after a series E 6 pot bell housing and I may have a series 3 4.
Pot one. Won't be able to look and check for a day or two.
Where are you in the country?

That's a late one, suffix D onwards at a guess, with the one
hole on the clutch side, 4 cylinder. Possibly almost one of the
last, it appears to have a smooth input shaft. Best to match the
input shaft and release housing together, as if you put a late
housing with early shaft, the scroll can rip the seal. Also, the
other way round, it pisses out.
