once and for all to clear this up........

Now petrol and diesel bell housings........
6 cylinder are different to 4 cylinder petrol.
Now the main thing im trying to work out are 4 cylinder petrol
and diesel bell housings different. Everyone says yes...I say NO
as i tried it today. The spacings are different.
Now the top hat clutch casings. Some have a d shape bottom to
them and others have an extra protrusion on one side of the
bottom d shape. Im assuming early ones do not have it. ie series
2, late series 2 and 2a have the lump... True????????
Now i would like a DIESEL bellhousing does anyone have one
spare???? Thanks guys!

Diesel and petrol are interchangeable
IOE (2.6 and 2ltr petrol) and OHV engine belhousings arent
interchnagable
OHV engine ones are (i.e 2.25d, 2.25 petrol, 2ltrd)
There are other differences like bearing sizes, but in terms of
stud pattern the 2.25's are all the same

yes all the bellhousings can be swopped onto any box but im sure
the stud patterns are different!
today i got a cracked diesel bellhousing and it fitted onto a
2.25 diesel. I tried a petrol bellhousing and it did nt fit. I
also tried a s3 one which also fitted.
So there must be several stud patterns................

petrol and diesel, unless it is a petrol 6 pot, are
interchangeable.
That is why you don't get diesel or petrol gearboxes!
series 2, 2a and 3 boxes will all fit 2 1/4 diesel or petrol
engines (apart from 6 pots) as the stud spacing is the same.

Do you need a bellhouseing. Series 3 and came of a 2.25 diesel.

Well i have a bellhousing here with a different stud pattern to
the 2 i looked at today and the starter housing is in a
different place....... :WTF

from memory, the non 6 pot has a stud in the centre at the top,
the 6 pot is different, it has a stud either side of the
vertical
does this help?

I concur
what about 2.25/2.5 90/110 did they keep the series stud pattern
or change to fit the later transmission - I guess the same by
the fact the 2.5 and TDI etc go into a series

1.6 and 2.0 petrol should be same as 6 pot maybe you have one
from a rover car
all 2.25 are the same as is the studs on the defender 2.5d and
td
