It's worth getting this DVD even if you're not interested in the
Trucks it's such a good watch. The book The Long Haul Pioneers by
Ashley Coghill is a good read and has more info about the trip
they're both available from www.oldpond.com as well as the usual
       places

As owners of Series Land Rovers we probably take a bit of this
for granted ... but it is refreshing to see the guys stripping
the hub at 8mins into the first clip ... with todays litigation
fears I am not allowed to change the wheel for a spare in the
event of a breakdown with the college minibus - let alone
investigate why the brakes are dragging!
       Thanks for sharing the clips!

^^^ I was pleasantly surprised to see a Polish artic driver
changing a wheel himself in a layby the other day. For the
reasons you say I doubt many Brits would, perhaps that explains
why the eastern Europeans do so well here, they seem to just
knuckle down and get on with it.

       Great stuff!
I seem to remember reading on a truck drivers forum a few years
ago that Leyland gave them a suitably equipped Marathon to use
for the TV series so there would be an English truck in amongst
       their all Scania fleet.

They (BL) sure did, along with two Range Rovers for filming...
plus a third, full of spares for the chronically unreliable
Marathon. The driver Dick Rivers was a BL demonstration driver I
think, BL were paying him a pittance for the job so Astrans saw
him right for a few quid. There's a great book, "The Long Haul
Pioneers" all about Astran and the Middle East runs, highly
recommended but be warned, you WILL want a classic Scania after
       reading it!

I will have to get hold of a copy of that book and try to resist
the temptation to buy a Scania then!

Bringing this back to the top because I was at the Retro Truck
show at Gaydon last weekend and Ashley Coghill who wrote The
Long Haul Pioneers book did a fantastic presentation about
Middle East Trucking in the 60's,70's an 80's.I'm not sure if
he'll do another one but if you see it advertised I would jump
at the chance to go it was a fantastic day with some of the
original drivers talking about a way of life we'll never see
       again
