       80 reasons to be happy
By: FenTiger Date: December 23, 2012, 2:48 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
As work has started again on this, i thought I had better start
       a dedicated thread.
Sourced about 2 1/2 years ago through Landyboy, this arrived on
my driveway for a minimal sum. I have always wanted an 80, and
was never really satisfied with my 88.

The tin worms had been hard at work. A little fettle of the
original 2.0 IOE had it running, more or less, and all gears
worked and it moved in a fashion. Looking at the damage to the
chassis, the roll hoop and the extra plating to the fuel tank,
it looks like it may have been trialled a bit in the past.
Without further a do the strip down commenced and the horrors
       started:

I welded on a spare S2 rear cross I had, but wasn't really happy
with it as it didn't look right:

       August 2010
I was still full of new purchase motivation at this point, so
looking at the rotten bulkhead, got some profiles bent up and
       started building a new one.....

  HTML http://sphotos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-prn1/40654_455275556797_6489209_n.jpg
I got to this point and then lost my way a bit. Not sure which
way to go with it and unhappy with the state of the rest of the
chassis and the rear end, I completely stripped it and stacked
the various bits around chez FT until a decision was reached.
In the following couple of years a lot happened. We were blessed
with the FenCub, a couple of other Rovers came and went.
Fashions in LR's came and went and I got to work on another
       couple of 80's.
To this end a final specification has been reached:
Warmed up 2.25 running the twin SU setup I chanced across and
       few years ago.
ACR exhaust I have had for while.
2a gearbox + OD (none of this faffy synchro malarky!)
Parabolics (special rears from a batch that we had made up)
Series 2/3 Axles running LWB brakes + remote servo.
       130 rims and 235 x 85 x 16 AT Radials
Bodywork stripped of camo paint, flatted and beaten straight,
       but left as is.
Would this should leave me with, is a useable 80 with of the
shelf mechanicals, but a reasonable turn of speed. I had toyed
with all sorts of engine choices, but went for the smooth, quiet
power of petroleum. The engine I have is ex-MOD with a reported
       8k km on it.
Over the last couple of years I have been picking up bits here
       and there, such as:
  HTML http://sphotos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/644709_10151242183781798_1451608155_n.jpg
The above are two sets of rear GB para's, specially adapted to
fit the rear of an 80. (one set was for a pal of mine) These
were sourced by Landyboy, after we saw and 80 at the LRO Show
sporting a pair and got details from the owner.

       Nov 2012
Following and unfortunate turn of events, a great weekend's
spannering and some folding, I ended up with another chassis.
This one had a much better rear end, but the front was somewhat
bent and the middle turned out to have a bit if a twist. The
front was cut off and placed in the garage for work to start:
  HTML http://sphotos-e.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/600027_10151332245081798_477458658_n.jpg
       This week:
The front of the second chassis was not salvagable and had been
chopped about for other engines to be fitted. I wanted to keep
my chassis number the proper mounts, so the front was chopped
       off my old chassis:
  HTML http://sphotos-h.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc6/603212_10151375297371798_408450373_n.jpg
Trying to keep as much good overlap as the rust would allow:
  HTML http://sphotos-d.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/560675_10151375297376798_1413765781_n.jpg
It was worse that I remembered....
  HTML http://sphotos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/16802_10151375297386798_411086277_n.jpg
It was offered up to the new rear end, using the bulkhead
       support holes for initial alignment:
  HTML http://sphotos-g.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash3/16779_10151375299156798_908072627_n.jpg
  HTML http://sphotos-a.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/385694_10151375299161798_1215467404_n.jpg
A good days work today with the capable help of Goose of this
parish, has seen the twist taken out of the chassis and half of
the front section welded on. All the welds have been let in, so
the join should be invisible when I am done:
  HTML http://sphotos-c.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-ash4/385651_10151376740421798_1656847023_n.jpg
There is still much to do to the chassis and plenty of new metal
required, but progress has been made.
I have set myself the deadline of this year's LATP. So many
thanks to Icey for making it later this year, I am going to need
       it!

Like the look of those rear springs are they readily available?
Mine had new shitpart springs fitted when I bought it but after
a 1000 miles the offside spring is as flat as a pancake!!

Springs are special order through a secret source and not cheap.
You have to factor in the cost of a brand new pair of GB paras.
These are then dismantled, cut, tapered at the ends, re-rolled
and set, reassembled and painted. I will let you do the
       maths.....
