gearbox falling out of gear

My current gearbox that i fitted being told its good dosent go
into 4wd high and clatters on the overun badly like a bearing
has collapsed. yay. now my old box i removed ironically is in
much better condition although it falls out of gear mainly 3rd
on overrun or when sat in idle winching, does not jump out. so
will this be the detent springs and ball bearings do you think
or something else? I would like a rebuild really but cant afford
time or money unless anyone has one to swap i can just throw in!

not going into 4high, will be corroded shafts in the front
output housing.
falling out of third is likely a broken detent spring on teh
3rd/4th syncro hub.
Both can allegedly be done insitu, the shafts for the high range
would most likely be the easier of the two to fix with the box
in place.
Take the top cover and selectors out of the box you have taken
out and have a look at the 3rd/4th hub, or drain teh oil and
see if any flat metal bits come out.

Well my current box is a lost cause as its a full bearing
rebuild i recon so il not bother messing about with it. My other
box is on the floor and so changing the spring would be good
then i can fit it. How does one go about doing such a thing?

well, you could take the part out of the first box and put it in
the second.
bell housing off, it's the first bit you cometo inside, pretty
much.
have a look at the gearbox thread in the tech archive...
Not sure if yours is a 2 or a 3 box, but the 3rd/4th bits are
the same. It also shows how the high/low/4wd bits work
