Simon,
Get it running as much as it will without the air filter pipe
connected. Block off the top of the carb with a dry rag (not
petrol soaked!) and not your hand. As it starts to die pull the
rag off, repeat and repeat and repeat. The object is to suck the
blockage through the jet. If it doesn't work you'll have to do
it the proper way and clean the carb internally. If you've got
some injector cleaner you could try that. Beware of spit backs
through the carb.
The vac pipe does not have such a big effect as described above.

Tried that Richard, but it was having none of it. Swapped carb
over for another one I was given, and its running alot better
now. Still needs timing up properly and fettling but at least I
can drive it. The vac pipe was already replaced anyways with a
copper one as opposed to a crap plastic one, so its fitted. Il
clean the other carb up when I can be arsed, which at the moment
wont be soon!

Set the timing to 6 degrees and fiddled a bit more, all seems a
bit better but exhause is smoking bluey grey when you let off
the throttle, bluey grey, and appears to be steaming a bit at
idle. Also the engine seems to run on a bit when stopped.

Running on,
Mixture to lean, timng to advanced
Steam at idle - all the time, or after idling for a while. when
its very cold steam isnt unusual when idling for a few minutes -
and have you given it time to warm up properly, will need a run
not just sitting idling for a while
Blue smoke on over-run - valve guide seals, or bore wear. If the
engine has been stood a while dont worry, run it a while and let
the rings free up before worrying

Have you set the timing at 6°btdc or atdc?

Thats ok. What colour are the plugs? This should give you an
idea if its running lean or rich.

To early, unless its a low comp head.
go closer to TDC and that will probably fix the running on

Its supposed to be a turner engineering head, or so we think!
I did take a plug out the other day and it seemed fairly clean,
not black or oily, but im looking again tomorrow. Found out
today that the replacement rad from maggie also had a bloody
hole in it. Thats 3 s3 rads I have here and they all leak!
Radweld going in in the morning and hopefully will seal it,
failing that time to buy a newun!

There are three rads here Simon but I cannot vouch for any of
them.
