2.25 Petrol engine issues
DIR By: wilkobob

Got the 2.25 engine in my 109 finished today, but having running
issues.
Starts on choke and runs smooth, but wont rev, just dies and
back / miss fires.
Tried fiddling with the carb and can get it to run at different
revs but wont idle and rev up.
The engine worked fine when it was in the other 109 it came out
of about a year ago, the only thing thats been off it is the
carb, which was borrowed and replaced, nothing adjusted in the
mean time though.
Aside that, the radiator is full of holes so I need to fit
another, and the vac advance pipe has melted when I dropped a
screwdriver whilst pissing about with the carb on it and it
pressed it against the exhaust manifold.
So need to sort the running issues, replace the rad and replace
the vac advance pipe.
Any help with the running issues would be greatly appreciated.
Simon

If it helps, I have an unknown Weber 34ICH up here if you wasnt
to try it out. I can remove it and keep it to one side for you.
I have to fook about with my diesel tomorrow, and need bits out
of the garage, so it's no sweat to get it out.

Sounds like the missing vacuum advance pipe causing your
problem. As you accelerate suction is created (vacuum) in the
pipe which goes to a small bellows on the disributor , the
bellows then moves the internals in the distributor round a tiny
bit thus adanvacing or retarding the ignition .i.e when the
accelerator is pushed for more power the spark needs to be later
when the petrol mixture in the cylinder is at its most
compressed to cause a bigger bang. and obviously an earlier
spark means the petrol mixture in the cylinder will be less
compressed thus a smaller bang meaning less power to move the
piston back down the bore.If your engine was running ok before,
make sure you reset your carb to as it was.To prove the theory
you could loosen off the distibutor and twist it slightly to
advance or retard your ignition ..But if you do you will need to
re-time the ignition to get it spot on. I'm not a expert and
have only found this out by years of tinkering and tea there may
be someone on here who can explain it all better than me but
hope it helps :smilewide:

The vac tube was my next idea to try.

If it starts and runs I would go down the ignition front: try
the condensor in the disi. Can give the same problem.
Then the disi itself. I've found that the vacuum can cause
rougher running at higher revs but if it dies straight away I
would go for timing....

I'd be looking at a blocked jet in the carb personally, that is
classic symptoms of a blocked main jet.

The vac tube was fine til it fell on the manifold and melted, i
tried removing it prior to this and it ran even more rough
without. I was thinking blocked jet myself, how does one go
about cleaning / checking it on a webber.
Cheers for the offer jim, il bear it in mind.

I'd check for vacuum leaks as well. I was tinkering with the 88
a few years back and it displayed similar symptoms, what I'd
done was leave the vacuum hose off between the inlet manifold
and brake servo. They get really upset if something like that is
missing. Have you disturbed the inlet manifold? If that gasket
isn't 100% they run like shit too.

I second the plugged main jet thing as well. I had a plugged
main on a Zenith that did exactly as you describe. Start and
idle fine, but would not go any further, no matter what you
tried.

checkd all sorts today after replacing the rad and fitting a
choke cable.
I can get it to run and drive on the choke, but not without -
will idle without.
Id say i checked the timing, but in reality, we just bodged it
round until it sounded better (and it doesnt run on anymore),
but its not been checked with a timing light or owt as someone
must have borrowed my light and not brought it back.
New bit of vac advance pipe fitted also.
I have another unknown webber carb here so might bung that on
tomorrow and try it.
