problem tappet clearance

after I dropped a push rod in without any due care and attention
and subsequently broke a tappet slide I reassembled the new bits
with alot of care and attention but am have trouble with getting
that tappet to stay at the correct clearance over the valve.
I checked post asembly, post run up, post 500mile trip and half
way back on that trip, i had to partake in a bit of midnight
spannering to re set the clearence on that same one.
When the engine is cold it runs ok listening to it, but once
warmed up it is not and I know when i whip the cover off next
I'm going to find it needs adjusting again.
Anone got any ideas on these symptoms?

Are the tappets and valves themselves worn? I understand that
the surfaces can cease to be flat. You stick a flat gauge
between them and set them but because they're more like curved
mating surfaces you end up with, effectively, a bigger gap than
you want.

Its possible but the problem is occuring on one culprit only.

does the gap grow and need closing up again ??
if so i'd suggest that the cam follower (and possibly the cam
lobe) is wearing rapidly, you might find it a worthwhile
exercise to pull the follower back out and check for wear
i'm guessing it's just plain faced as i've not stripped a 2.25

Ive had a simmilar problem, albeit on a shilpa diesel. It was
caused by the top of the valve wearing into the rocker.
The top of the valve formed a hollow spot on the rocker,
Gradually wearing right through the hard case on the
rocker....It wore pretty rapidly after that.
Rather strange how it was the only rocker to wear.

I now remember having this self same problem.
I ended up buying a special tool. It was a ratchet device that
you used to adjust the tappets; listening to the number of
clicks needed for a "good" setting and transferring this to
others...can't remember the exact method. Anyway, the upshot was
that you opened the gap by a set amount regardless of the shape
of the surfaces.

Bloody ell £33.78, down from £54.41.
I bought a nice old new shiney one in a box, badged as a Draper
for 50p from the car boot a few years ago.
Never used it though, tried a while back just couldn't get on
with it and resorted to the old method. I'm not selling it
though, as I haven't investigated it's proper use yet!

you don't want to trade it for some Dog Bone spanners then Stuey
;D
I imagine they have a use if the operating surfaces of the
rocker arm or valve head are dished out ( as said)
