shagged gearbox trouble

Hola,
Just wondering if anyone has any advice on how i might be able
to eek a bit more life from my gearbox, or better still fix the
problems that are giving me grief with it.
It's a 2a box, was recon at some point but it's spent the latter
part of it's life behind a 3.5 V8 and a 200TDi. Not ideal for
longevity. The main problem with it was that it jumps out of
1st, an easy one to work with as you just have to change as soon
as you're moving. No big deal.
However, it got knocked into low box when we had the truck apart
the other week which has brought a whole wealth of new problems.
I've currently got no front prop fitted, and even when it's in
2wd there's an intermittent metallic knocking. Landyboy reckons
is the output for the front prop spinning around with nothing to
hold it steady, if so that'd mean it's stuck in 4wd.
Tried changing from low to high and there's no change (transfer
box jumps into neutral when trying to pull away in low as well)
even when i pull up on the high ratio (got no spring between it
and the transmission tunnel), it doesn't seem to disengage 4wd
and the knock is back.
Said knock itself is intermittent - drive calm and it's not even
there for an entire journey, but give it some beans around town
and it'll start kicking up a fuss.
Any ideas what might be up with it and how i could fix it for
the time being? I do have a front prop to go on this week but
don't want that to make it worse. I know it's bolloxed and needs
replacing, but i've gotta drive 100 miles home in it this
weekend so a part-time fix would be handy, otherwise i'll just
be sat at 50 on the M25 with my fingers in my ears.
Cheers!

I agree with your thoughts.
fit the spring on the 4x4 lever, and it will stop it dropping
into 4x4. symptom sounds like it is in 4x4, no real problem with
the front prop removed. if it won't disengage the selector rods
will need cleaning/freeing off

What he said. The rods go rusty preventing it disengaging. Head
it got fwh on it by chance?

Cool, i'll get under there and have a good clean, see if i can
find a spring too. Has got fwh's, yeah - so even if it stays
stuck it won't totally be the end of the world, but still not
ideal!

way ahead of you, just been creating a bodgetastic shortlist
if it works, that could possibly be the most simple solution in
history... cheers!

The racer's always used a clothes peg on the yellow knob shaft
(pnarr, pnarr!).
This isn't as much as a bodge as you'd think and I believe was
quite common on leafer based racers in their day as the peg
works both ways.
Means we can go from low to high range and still remain in 4wd
while belted tightly into the seat!
