The golden age of steam on bbc4 started off with the Talyllyn

I didn't see the programme, cos I was on my way to that London,
but the youtube link shows what these little narrow gauge
railways used to be and ought to be. Sadly, they are now changed
out of all recognition by expansion, mass tourism and
legislation. I expect that such overgrown track isn't allowed
now and that all the staff must have those bloody hi-viz jackets
on if they so much as venture out of the station shoppe!

That's one reason why I prefer road engines Dave, you can bugger
off to the pub or just have a run out somewhere and no-one can
stop you. :giddy: Though the hi-vis brigade have taken the fun
out of (most) rallies unfortunately.

Not yet anyway. ::) The safety nazis will catch up with road
steam sooner or later. There's always some cunt in an office
that has to justify his salary and looks for an easy target.
The whole Hi-viz and H&S overkill thing is one of my pet hates.
The railway that I was involved with once had an open day whilst
we didn't actually have a railway. We laid about 150 yards of
track in the yard of the mill where the rolling stock was stored
and the intention was to at least have something running.
Now these locos are noisy and, given the length of the track,
would only run at about 3mph but some safety nazi insisted on
putting out a row of chairs along the line and wrapping hi viz
tape around them along the length of the track. It ruined any
photo opportunities and was unneccessary. The locos ran so slow
that, even if anyone was competely deaf AND blind and happened
to walk in front of one, the driver could easily have pulled up.
There was also one who wanted to enforce the then current (2001)
Railtrack regs regarding how far one is supposed to walk away
from the track! Now I'll admit that a fair distance must be kept
from an Inter-City 125 passing at 100+ mph, in order not to be
knocked off one's feet by the air pressure, but a little Ruston
trundling along at 2 or 3mph isn't quite the same. So applying
the same rules is complete overkill.
I argued and eventually won and the chair and tape were removed.
Guess what? No one got run over.
