2 Electrical Q's, blower fan speeds and sidelights

       Hi Chaps,
First one, heater fan only does one speed (not sure if high or
low but guess low). Never has worked on 2 speeds and I don't
know if it worked before, all the electrical bits and blower
came off a donor vehicle that I didn't use. Tried a new switch
and its no different. Ideas? Could it be the resistor coil?
Second one is the front sidelights work fine when on sidelight
setting on the switch, move to dip beam and the dips come on but
the sidelights go out. Again tried a switch and no change. Have
been advised this may be an earth problem but not sure what I am
really checking for if that makes sense?
       1980 S3 SWB
       cheers

       The lights sound earthy.
       From the top.....
On Landy's (and most cars) they only use wires from the battery
+ve to individual components. The return flow to the battery
-ve is acheived through the metal of the body and chassis and
then a short strap from the chassis to the battery.
So, every item like lights will either screw straight to the
bodywork or there'll be a short wire to a screw into the body or
chassis. These corrode over time.....especially steel screws
       into burmabrite bodywork.
From the trouble lights, you need to find where they are earthed
to the body. Unscrew these earths and give all the surfaces a
jolly good clean with some sandpaper (etc). Then
reassemble.....preferably with some copper grease in there for
luck. That might solve your problem.
Good luck. These things are annoying.
       Cheers!
       Robert.

Not sure about the fan, pity its not running only on high, I
don't think I've ever used it on low; pointless fan speed IMHO.
( for refernece, high speed on my late s3 is the centre position
on the switch, in case you weren't sure)
The lights could be earth or bad connections. They should earth
in the centre of the rad housing behind/in front of the bonnet
release catch, and the rad housing is steel??
Check the connections, wiggle, clamp, push further in etc etc.
I've had similar symptoms and I usually find it to be a lose
bullet connector ( the original type) .

I can only comment from my experience rewiring my Series 3...
I had a very similar issue with the sidelights and found that I
had mixed the switches up... While the switches look similar
their changeover characteristics are different... I spent 1/2
hour pondering the fault before I realised my mistake...
As for the fan if it works ie blows then the fan is OK... At
full speed it makes a lot of noise and moves quite a bit of
air... The half speed is provided by a resistor.... One of the
wires from the switch should go via the input side of the
resistor (Half speed) the other via the other side of the
resistor, (The one the motor cable is attached too, or should be
attached too) and bypassing the resistor and into the motor
       (Full speed).
       The resistor could be knackered..
Hope that makes sense... If not I can take some piccies of mine
       later...

       Muchus Gracious chaps
Should have said originally, this has been a rebuild from the
chassis up with the electrical stuff salvaged from a scrapper.
When I get back to the North I shall have another go and try
some direct earths to see if it shed some light on the whole
       thing...
From what you say about the fan maybe I have high speed :) To be
fair if it is the high speed then I don't really want low!
Centre position makes it whizz round and bottom position doesn't
change it, sounds like high is working then. As you said it is
just about shovelling in enough air as is so I think I'll not
       meddle to much for now....
       cheers
