Installling a BLOS - An open Question, (OK, aimed squarely at

Noel
I've looked at your BLOS conversion for soem time.
Fro thsoe that have not seen thsi go to:

I've got the ACR kit too, only I run CNG, but for our purposes,
it is identical. I use the ACR K&N presently. Now, because CNG
with a BLOS works exactly as it does for LPG, it'll go much as
yours does. I've pretty much got a handle on your conversion,
except how you U-turn the intake.
Your psot on this talks about using a V8 intake and a Stromberg
mount at the SU. Looks very tidy and easy to do, so my question
is, what bits for that intake did you use? I'm assuming it's
all sourced vai old school RR, so what is on my shoppping-list
at this point?
The K&N is hissy which is kinda nice, in a boy-racerish way, but
noisy at revs. Is that why you went for the stock item? It's
nice to get the intake into cooler air too. Lastly, doing it
agian, would you do anything different?
Photobucket has been fucked-over, so i can't put up pix at all.
The new interface is not clickable on my old Mac, so sorry I
can't do much.
I'm not sure if we are allwoed to use forum bandwidth, but I'll
put up one pic via this host.
Can i put my hand down now?

Here's a pic showing the intake:

As you correctly assumed it's all old school RR bits. I didn't
find a proper SU intake adapter so modified a Stromnberg type by
filling the slot with Devcon. The wire reinforced hose was lying
about at work, it has Dennis on it so it's either a rad or
intercooler hose off a bus.
I went down this route as, rightly or wrongly, I thought the K&N
wouldn't do as good a job as the stock air cleaner at keeping
water out of the engine when wading. Also, looking at the lack
of space I thought it wouldn't fit by the time the relevant bits
of hose were there the connect the BLOS, as things are with this
set up it's tight but the heater hose fits and I only needed to
shape the inner wing edge down a bit to not contact the elbow.
As things stand it's a bit of a compromise. When I first tried
to run it up on gas it wouldn't start, I pulled the air cleaner
hose off the BLOS and it started instantly. An adjustment up of
the idle cured that, but it shows how crap the stock air cleaner
is in terms of efficiency. At present it runs like a dog on
petrol, when you put your foot down it's fine for second or two
then chuffs black smoke out, semi-missing and loses power. It
could be the air cleaner I've got isn't good and is partially
blocked internally of course, I'll have to check that. Air
cleaner efficiency aside I wouldn't change anything, other than
sourcing a proper SU adapter.

Thanks for that Noel. I'm collecting bits now. I gathered that
was the train of thought involved in fitting the std air
cleaner. I don't do too much wading so I may shoe-horn in the
K&N. BTW: I foiund this, more work I know but see:

Looks good if that is waht you need. I was speaking to Roland
of ACR, and the K&N is a big factor in getting the extra
giddy-up, but I don't fancy your chances in four plus foot of
water. Without resort to a super-butch snorkel, maybe that link
is the solutionn for you? Thanks again.

Interesting, I did have a K&N fitted with my BLOS setup (on a
2.5 petrol, with twinchoke weber) and found that it actually was
a little bit (noticable, but not a huge amount) down on power
than with the oilbath. So I went back to the oilbath and the
power was back up.
This was with a 6pot oil bath, so a bit bigger. I suspect the
oil bath was getting a better supply of cold air than the K&N
was too.

Perhaps i shoud have stressed, Roalnd at ACR is probably the
world auth on getting grunt out of this particular engine. Thus
when I reaclled my converstaion with him,

He stressed, this was with his set-up. ie the full ACR monty.
He was expressing his surprise, and me mine. More usually an
air-filter change is a boy-racer mod, with the same level of
effectiveness as any other of its ilk, ie a down-grade. Which
bears your experience out. In this instance, there's more going
on than jsut an air-filter, afterall his mods remove teh other
restrictions. When fitting LPG, he also told me putting in a
pile of ignition advance gives nothing. Stock is best, again
surprising, he expalinaed this particualr trait was down to the
long-stroke, which if you think about it (and it took me a bit
to get my head round it) stands right, on thsi engine, with this
set-up, anyway.

Fair enough, everyone finds a different solution that works for
them I suppose!
My ignition advance curves are controlled from a megajolt ECU
with two ignition maps selectable via a switch in the cab.
Through lots of trial and error (and some research) i've found
the best setup for my engine is a much flatter curve for LPG.
I.e. - a lot more advance at low rpms, but barely any advance
over the petrol map at higher RPM. This has given mine a lot
more low down grunt on LPG than it used to have, and a good
amount of poke at top end. I also found that the standard curve
offered by the distrubutor is pretty conservative, you can get
much more top end oomph with some tweaking. If I can resurect
my old laptop I'll download my maps from the ECU and put them up
somewhere.
It certainly doesn't hang around!

Long term future plans are to fit fuel injection and see what
can be done. But thats going to have wait for a bit yet!

Does the BLOS work like an SU? If it does then haven't you got
a moving restriction upstream of the carb when running on
petrol? Maybe that has something to do with it - although I'm
pretty sure the SU setup should be able to cope what with it
being a variable venturi affair.

The BLOS does work like an SU Doug but it didn't do this
chuffing smoke thing when first fitted. I really do need to
check the air cleaner, it seems slightly lumpier on LPG than it
did. It's probably full of mud or summat. :rolleye0012:
That air cleaner does look like a nice solution fuckwit, there
is certainly scope for improvement. I may have got this wrong,
it was a while ago, but I thought Chris Perfect said on his
website that low resistance air cleaners/exhausts caused
problems with LPG. No idea why though. I suppose the sensible
thing to do is fab something to attach the K&N to the end of the
intake hose and try again, the air temp would be the same as
stock and at least I'd have a like-for-like comparison. My
greatest challenge was finding something to attached to the SU
that would give a round outlet to allow the BLOS to be
connected. I drew a blank and went for factory bits, if you find
something I'd be interested to see it.

He did indeed. Frankly I wasn't able to tell the difference
with oil bath / no oil bath before I had my SU setup fitted (and
haven't tried anything since). He also said when starting to
"flick the key a few times to prime the system"... I guess that
doesn't work too well if there's only a little K&N sitting right
on top of the mixer - it certainly makes no difference to how
well it starts on mine.

K&N's don't work very well at all with traditional LPG mixer
setups as the air is too free flowing to create enough pressure
drop to draw the LPG in through the mixer. But you should be
able to use a K&N with the BLOS setup as it creates enough
pressure differential by raising and lowering the piston to draw
the required amount of gas through the V shaped slot. The BLOS
literature says you can use one as long as it's not too close to
the unit itself.
