       3.5 diffs in a 2.286 petrol 109

Funds willing following moving into our flat and paying off
ovedue debts I have chance of a 3.5 differential for the rear
axle of CliVE. Has anyone ran one with a standard engine?? Also
can you run a 3.5 and a 4.7 while Greenlaning or am I asking to
       much?
Currently even a knaked overdrive is way out of what I can
       afford.

You'd get away with it if its nice and slippy, but i would't do
       it for prolonged periods.
       I imagine it would be a bit overgeared for a 2.25 in a 109.

Personally wouldn't bother I took the 3.54's out of Prescilla
earlier this year, it pulls a little better and drives a better
and TBH there is no notable difference in MPG.
On another note, when we went to last years Xmas bash and I
changed to 7.50 x 16s instead of SLTs with 3.54's it ran even
worse, sluggish and even the slightest incline it slowed even
further. On the flats was OK but the OD never got engaged all
       the way there and back.

       I think over geared,
I sometimes ran the 88 with the OD in all the time, was fine on
the flat, but on hilly areas or with any weight (similar then to
unladen 109) it was noticeably over geared.
Given the 3.54's are higher than an OD I think a bad move.
That said, I got 23mpg with the OD, and on direct gearing I
still get 23mpg ... therefore why bother with high ratio diffs
       or OD

You can't mix ratios. I had 4.7:1 in the back and 3.9:1 in the
front once (accidentally) and, even on slippery grass and mud,
       it was undrivable.
And, in agreement with comments above, a standard petrol 109" is
going to be too highly geared on 3.54 diffs. Look for a pair of
Rover car 4.3:1 diffs, it'll pull them ok.

In my 88 with 2.5 engine running (standard carb/manifold so
about same power as a well sorted 2.25 I reckon) I can [i]Just
about[i] get away with it. On hills I have to give it a bit more
       gas/ride clutch a bit.
That said my current commute is up and down the motorways and
once up to speed its so much more relaxed and refined, even
around town it ok once going, just setting off a bit of strain.I
agree a 109 with 3.54 woild push it a bit
shame something in between 3.54 and 4,7 isn't more readily
       available

A 200/300tdi and 3.5 diffs are the way to go.
