       Jon's 88" 2A
   DIR By: Austin
       Date: November 12, 2012, 1:34 pm
       ---------------------------------------------------------
Hi all, I said I would post up a thread for my 88" ages ago, but
I dont post on here much and have never gotten round to it. I
have lost the photos from when I first got it, so will have to
make do with what I have. So it begins...
I bought it around a couple of years ago, knowing nothing much
about them and not having seen it. This was a bad idea, if you
are thinking of doing this...no. It was completely shit. It was
a marine blue petrol hardtop that had been converted to diesel
and brush painted green, limestone and hammershite silver. It
had a s3 front on it and an interior that was covered in sodden
wet brown carpet. It was also fitted with disco wheels an bald
205s and the springs were knackered. I felt a little silly.
       :haha:
First thing I did was rip out all the carpet to find a very
rusty bulkhead, so that was "repaired" in situ, badly. It was no
good anyway. Then, since i was going to have to replace the
tyres anyway, I want down to L W Vass who were doing a good deal
on michelin xzls at the time and had a set of 235/85s on 130
wheels. All of the springs were replaced, some bit of chassis
welding done and I ran it like this for a while.
In the meantime a replacement bulkhead was being built, from 3
that i had got from the scrappers and a load of plate. My dad
did the bigger part of this. I had decided that I really wanted
a truck cab, and since the hardtop was such a mess and leaking
everywhere I started to look for one. I got offered a dead
series 3 for £200 so ended up having that and breaking it for
       its good bits.

It had a mint defender bulkhead on it and gayspokes, bucket
seats etc, so all that went on ebay and I ended up with a free
truck cab, axles, overdrive, 2.25d and gearbox, the chassis
broke its back when the roof was unbolted so was folded in half
and weighed in with all the other scrap. Soon after I found an
ifor rear canopy for the right money.
Everything was fixed/painted and the 88" was taken off the road
to swap it all over, which brings us to this.

Once all was completed it looked pretty smart from the front.

But no so much from any other angle.

It has been back on the road ever since, and while it still
looks rough, its reliable now. It keeps having a bit of work
done here and there, and it has just had the rear diff in it
from the s3. Future plans are to fit my replacement doors, as
the current ones are rotten and finish the painting. Other than
that just keep filling it with firewood/dogs/engines and
       enjoying it. Cheers for looking.

Cheers guys, I really wanted a 3/4 tilt on it, but I need it to
be a little more secure so this is a good compromise. I'm hoping
to put a solid door on the back of it soon to keep some of the
       rain out.

Well I haven't done much to this over the last year. Fitted a
set of towing eyes to the front and just used it really. It's
going to get a new motor soon though, a 2.5 petrol. The diesel
in it is worn out, and it frequently gets overtaken on hills by
the cloud of smoke coming out of the exhaust. It shouldn't be
too bad on fuel compared anyway as I have only been getting
17-18mpg out of it. I hope to sort out some other issues at the
same time and maybe even paint some more of it, it has been half
grey for too long really. :rolleye0012: Here it is on a fairly
local lane early this year. The truck in the background is on
the M6, I know where I would rather be. >Htlr<
