Allen Power Scythe!

Cross posted over here as I thought it might be appreciated....
I bought this a little while back and it has been languishing in
a friends garage since. But he wants the space, I've got the
time and it'll be needed in the spring for topping our field.
Or even sooner if it snows as its got a front plough/dozer blade
with it. Also has a couple of spare knives so I can practice
sharpening them

It was a runner when laid up last year and hopefully shouldn't
be too hard to get back into working order. Its sitting in my
old mans garage at the moment, which will be a nice surprise
when he gets back from holiday.
Health and safety is massively overrated I feel.

Cracking bit of kit that, we used to have one to take the top
off of about 2 acres in the early 1970's.
All I can remember is that is vibrated a lot, and you had to be
very very careful near those blades, and keep the dogs away from
it.
Get it up and running.

They were playing with one of those on Wartime Farm on the telly
the other night. Absolutely love that programme...
They implied that it was fine when it was working "in the
grass", but the moment it came into the open it became a
cantankerous and dangerous run-away sod!

My old man aquired a couple of those when I was a kid - great
fun to cut the grass! A villiers engine too I think.

Right, the other half said I wasn't allowed to play with my
scythe today, but then she went down to the field to put the
ponies to bed and I sneaked out...
I have a new friend. He is called Grim. He is a reaper. See
what I did there?
I've had a bit of a mess about, the clutch is going to need
freeing up, but it turns over, has compression, the knife bar
isn't seized, the tyres both hold air and its got oil in the
box. I had a cheeky pull of the starter rope and it sounds
pretty good. Going to scrub the filters up, clean out the tank
and see if it'll run as is.

Today I made busy with release, grease and rust stopper:

And then I filled the tank up with a cocktail of petrol and
other nasties to loosen and clean the internals, and while that
was soaking, I sorted the carb out so that it might actually
work.

Tank is clean now, if a little rusty. I might re-coat the
inside, but then again, I might not be arsed.
Petrol cap is cruddy but functional.

Fueltap is pretty screwed. Stuck closed on a knackered seal and
crumbly filter.

Theres complete valves or repair kits. I think a newun is in

Those fuel taps have a cork seal in them. An old trick is to
undo the little grub screw and pull the plunger out, the cork is
often in one piece, just dried out and shrunk, an hour soaking
in 3in1 oil or similar usually swells them back up and they
often go again, might be worth a try before paying for a new
one?

I did strip it out and the cork seal was a little plug of black
nastiness that crumbled to dust as it came out.
The repair kit is about 7 quid, or 17 for a complete valve...
