Fascinating. Never been one for stuff like that but it took me
back to my child hood. Proper metal work and going to steam
rallies with my step dad. He used to haul steam engines for a
chap. I used to get to go on the foot plate and drive them
around the show ground. Fond memories!

Personally i thought it was shite !!!!!! The shovel he made was
crap no fireman in there right mind would of used that it would
of done there hand in within the first mile. A decent firing
shovelhas a "T" handle for a reason something to push against so
you can shovel like mad. The problemis i know a bit too much
about the subjectimeven more perverse on the steam front than
"Mr Scruff" and that takes some doing :thumbs:

I know what you mean but have to remember that programmes like
this aren't intended for the likes of us anoraks. They're
entertainment with education thrown in and the majority of
viewers don't know the stuff that we'd know to be wrong. Such as
the narrator talking about the track gang laying wrought iron
rails. They're steel, not wrought iron! No one's used wrought
iron rails since Stephenson's era.
I expect the shovel thing was just to illustrate how stuff was
made by blacksmiths cos I'll bet a lot of kids these days
haven't got any idea. Do they even teach metalwork in schools
nowadays?
Other than that I enjoyed it. Guy never made out as if he was
doing it all and there didn't appear to be any bullshit to that
effect.
Pity it was a GWR engine - all that copper-capped chimney stuff
:gay:. They could have used a proper engine, something built in
Doncaster. ;-)

I bloody hope not! That programme was pure unadulterated
bullshit. I speak as one who was involved with one of their
programmes.
That lot did absolutely fuck all and the only decent one out of
them all was the lass - Claire, I think her name was. She's a
proper engineer and knows her stuff. Don't even talk to me about
Thurston and as for Suggs the least said the better!

I've just watched a recording of it. It is shit, there is no
need for it to be shit like this. What is wrong with saying
'locomotive' instead of 'steam train'? Why rivets instead of
stays - no attempt to explain what they do at all! Same with the
safety valve, no attempt to show its assembly or what it does,
or why. Dibnah would have done a 'demon stration'. None of this
would be too technical and is a missed opportunity to educate
people.
It also confuses platelayers and navvies.
Shame about the 'Gone Wrong and Rusty' locomotive too. Hardly a
'restoration', replacing a few stays and carrying out some other
routine repairs.
I thought the bloke talked like he was on drugs.

"Resistive materials" Now according to the comfortable shoe
wearing yoghurt weaving Lesbian ex-teacher sorry lecturer that
lives near me ...Resistive fekking materials FFS it's no wonder
the country has gone to shit .
When I was a kid ... I had a push bike ...when it broke I had to
learn to fix it or walk ....
When I was 16 ... I had a moped (fizzy) When it broke I had to
learn to fix it or walk
When I was 17 ... I had a cheap car When it broke I learned to
fix it or walk
And repeat infinitum RIGHT up to me buying a Landrover ... When
it broke ... etc etc etc
Kids today ... When it breaks Back to the main dealer under
warranty

I forgot about the rivets/stays thing and the "Train yard".
:banghead Mind you, what do you expect when even the BBC news
people say "train station". That annoys the fuck out of me! It's
"railway station", you plebs! You don't even need to be an
anorak to know that one.
