TDI Series 2a problems
DIR By: Danno1997

this time last year i had no series land rovers....now i have
four! the latest purchase is a S2 on a new chassis with a
200tdi..... now i have a few issues with it.... first off the
brakes are bad...worse than all the inefficiences if the thre
other 3 put together. Now this came as a suprise as its the only
one with a servo which is brandnew btw... the pedal feels really
hard and there is very little give in it and i need two feet and
a bit of swearing to make it stop! could it be a dodgey master
cylinder? if so what do i replace it with?
Also the engine runs uber cold....does not even get over the
white line into the 'normal' region. This as you can imagine is
very bad for heating the interior. even when i look under the
bonnet after a run it only just feels warm.
Apart from all this she is cherry except for the part about it
liking come off roundabouts backwards rather than forward, must
be a design fault rather tan driver error of course:-)
cheers
dan

Brakes - are you getting a vacuum from the vac pump (servo's
without vacuum do odd things)
Have you got the right MC (i.e not a 109 cylinder on and 88,
that makes the brakes realy heavy)
Running cold - doesnt it actually, or does the temp gauge lie
If it does check thermostat is working

Or check weather it has a thermostat at all! We had problems in
college with a Fordson Dexta running cool and it turned out
someone hadn't fitted a thermostat.......

all good answers will check vacuum first on brakes but dont have
a cle what master cyliner is on it. can also check for a
thermostat!--------------------------------------------------------

You may find the thermostat went faulty so the previous owner
just left it out.
Out of interest as the tdi engines run so cool is it worthwhile
fitting a slightly higher rated thermostat to help improve
heating? anybody know if this is a good idea?

Think the 200 only has the 88 deg stat. I originally had same
problem. New stat and the disco sender now causes the series
gauge to sit just touching the bottom of the N, and lovely
toasty warm air from the heater. My independant temp gauge
tells me its sitting at 90 degrees in that state.

You will find that a TDI runs pretty cool (especially at this
time of year)
Gauges can also indicate all sorts of things.
Mine appear to read "high" when I fitted my TDI (with existing
sensor) on the series gauge. Was corrected by adding a 10 ohm
inline resistor.
In actual fact, what the gauge was telling me was that the
engine was running in the normal range for a TDI, with the stat
hardly opening.
I believe the TDI stats are 90 Deg (ish) where'as the series
ones are cooler 82 & 72??
It's unlikely that the TDI will get this hot though, unless
worked hard.
Mine runs great with standard stat in,with temperature guage now
sitting in middle, and a decent amount of heat from heater.
I have a manually controlled radiator fan, but never need to use
it.

If the thermostat has been left out, I'd be checking for other
shortcuts too. First being the cam belt - unless you have proof
that the PO changed it recently, it'd be worth doing ASAP.
Might be worth checking that he hasn't blocked off half the
braking system too. I know someone who isolated the rear brakes
of a car once by putting a ball-bearing in the union - all to
save buying a new brake cylinder. Result was a hard pedal and
crap brakes...

my s2 heater chucks out loads of heat (200tdi engine), i did
spend ages flushing it out carefully though
i guess yours is still half full of crud
