I just was giving things a once over pre MOT (due next month)
and thought it looked a bit crusty around the rear axle
bumpstops, trusty screw driver and chisel out and ARRGH
       :smiley-furious:
upsidedown welding is not a speciality of mine, so I am not
shure but I may give it a crack, (or chicken out and get a mate
to do it) but do I need to take the loom out first, or just pull
it tight/make it some wire lifters?

Behind the old bumpstops Is a favourite hiding place for holes!!
I wouldn't bother removing the loom, just hold it up out the way
inside the chassis rail, I did it by putting bits of rod through
some holes in the side of the rail with the loom over them, then
just pull 'em out when it's cool! 8)

You should be able to keep it out of the way, but be carefull.
I melted one when it slipped down without me noticing.

that'll work - just what I wanted to hear - thanks - did not
fancy trying to pull the loom through, especially as everything
is working, cos I am sure after it had been in and out, pulled
and pushed, something would be sure to of broken!

When you cut out the bad metal, grind away the sides a bit so
that the new metal sits flush at the bottom and can stick out
the sides a bit. You can then weld easily down each side, and
just have to weld front and back from underneath. You get a much
       better looking repair that way.

Out of interest how thick is the chassis steel? what thickness
plate should you use for this?

To answer your question seriesewan, most people seem to use
       tinfoil. :-) :-)
I'm sure someone will be along to tell you what the the correct
thickness is, but I usually make my patches out of 2mm as that's
what I have around. It's probably a bit thinner than it should
be, but it's better than a hole!

i've always used 2mm+ for chassis repairs, and have also melted
a rear loom like most...! :rolleye0012:
