2.25 smoking diesel

Evening all. My boss has just acquired a 2.25 diesel s3. Hadn't
run for seven yrs. He's finally got it running but it smokes
like a teenager with a really bad habit. He says he cracked off
3 & 4 injectors and it changes thr engine noise but 1 & 2 makes
no difference. The smoke was a mixture of white and black. It
was enough to lose his house in it!
Thoughts pls?

First off - even a good one will smoke some when cold, and will
chuck out a slight black haze at full chat - that's just how
they are.
Usually if you have persistant white/grey smoke, it's a worn
timing chain retarding the injection timing. You can fudge this
up by advancing the pump a bit on the block, but it's best to do
the job properly and fit a new chain, as that keeps the cam
timing in...

If the engine is cranked over with the fuel stopped, is there an
uneven beat to the cranking? If so, I recommend head off.....
compression issues... gasket failure, stuck valves etc. Why was
it taken off the road?

He's not sure. The fella gave it to him. Jammy git! He's only
had it a week. He's gonna go back to the chap to try and
ascertain why he stopped driving it! He's going to start with
the basics first and go from there. Not sure how far he's
prepared to go. If he doesn't manage to sort it or it works out
to expensive he said he would give it to me. So its all good!

If you want it, tell him they are shit, underpowered lumps of
bigger shit. If that doesn't convince him tell him how much a
new injector pump is.
If he is a complete fruit loop and wants to keep it , try having
the injectors reconned ( could get pump done at the same time,
tested and resealed) . Whilst the injectors are being done get a
head gasket/front engine gaskets in stock, injector washers, a
timing chain and a dti.
If the timing is right against the correct mark on the flywheel,
the injector pump skew gear is in the right position, the push
rods are seated correctly ;-), the tappet clearences are right,
the tappet slides actually go up and down ::)and its got some
new fuel in it........................it should be ok, if it
isn't give the engine to Jim.

I'm more inclined to think - collector or perhaps 'burier' in a

Nice one. Thanks very much gents! That'll do for now. I think he
doesn't manage to sort it without havin to crack the engine in
two he'll ditch it in my direction! He already has an Austin
gypsy sat there gathering rust! :)

Turns out the accelerator cable was seized half on so it was
massively over fuelling. Good for him rubbish for me. Thank for
your input!
