Every time I'm driving up the A74(M) to Scotland and I see the
sign for the junction for Beattock I think of this.

Thanks Dave, I haven't seen that in years! Really enjoyed that
       glimpse of my childhood.
When my Dad retired from his last job, he was given the Hornby
       "Night Mail Express" train set!
When my parents moved to sheltered housing, he gave it to me,
saying that would be all I got when he passed on!
I'm an 009 man normally, but did put an 00 feeder onto my last
layout, just to turn the tables! :smilewide:
I mustn't get distracted my trains, I have an 88 to finish!

Quality. With a top-quality score by a young Banjamin Britten.
Every now and again the film is screened, silently, with a live
orchestra bashing out the score and some lyrical geezer to
recite Auden's words; often performed/screened back to back with
The way to the Sea (1936), a similar film about the London to
       Portsmouth line
Well worth it if you get the chance.

At the end of the short link to the poem you can watch the whole
film. A nice variety of coaches, locomotives etc. Most of the
daylight shots are of ordinary passenger trains as the postal
spent a lot of time running at night.
Collection and drop off on the move finished years ago, and
traveling post offices are now a thing of the past. All the mail
goes by road or air now, costs twice as much and isn't on your
       doorstep in the morning!
We have a 1939 built TPO in our museum, exactly like the ones in
the film, the wooden ceilings, the same lamp fittings, the funny
little seats etc. It still has its pick up apparatus, but the
drop off arms were removed whilst it was still in service.
