I've got most of a 2.25D in the unit at work thats destined to
go to Dove Holes Scrappy in the not too distant future. Don't
think it was the best of runners, I was planning on having the
pump and head off it but if anyone wants anymore then its
avalable.
I sometimes toy with the idea of how well the S1 would do with
the 2.5 but its got such a good 2.25 I don't think its worth
messing with, I quite like the way that goes too.
You can have the engine if you want Jim, but it'll cost you £1k
and come with a free 109 attached, if that doesn't sound a good
deal I'll keep it!

It was the locals on the farm we stayed at who asked me to right
it with the landy. (they only had a mk2 golf 1.6D which had
obveously had a suspension lift, I bet it wasn't the factory
optional rased suspension that probubly about 2 people ever
ordered).
Thing is there was quite a gang of them and they wanted to fuck
around next to it pulling on a rope too, not terably clever as
where they were standing for the pull if they fell over they'd
land on bits of rebar sticking out of the ground. If I was
pulling it I'd want to be in control of it and that'd mean other
people out the way, that probubly wouldn't be easy to explain if
you don't speek french, arabic or the local dialect. There is
also the fact when your half way into a 7000km trip its not
worth attempting things that might damage the vehicle as it
won't make your life easyer - the rear cross member has the odd
less solid spot so I wasn't too keen on indurance tests there.
There is also the fact that once the police are on the scene its
easyer to let them run the show and watch from a safe distance
laffing on the inside, the alternative could be enterpreted as
telling them how to do their job and helpful as it might actully
be they might not see it that way.
Still makes a good video, listen carefully to hear all the revs.

As to why the fuzz was there, if you want to go caving in many
conuntries it can require some degree of dipolmacy and
requesting permission as we had to in this case with both the
Moroccan and British embasys. This opens up some ofical
channels and you can sometimes become a bit of a political pupet
in some areas. They eather try and control where you can go
(Surprise surprise expeds in China have this issue) or try and
show you the full [tourist] expereance of their culture even if
you aren't really interested, infact thats when it gets anoying
especally if they are blatently just trying to make money from
it. We had a bit of that, and had a presentation of what must
be the worst music I've ever herd. Genrally though having spend
a couple of weeks walking around the mountains all day and never
saw anything bad (one day the all the dogs went mental,
aparently it was a large gang of monkeys moving through the
nearby woods, a bit weird but that was about it), the locals
tended to be very friendly and always tried to invite you home
for tea, though they were often more frosty with the female
members of the team, a few locals ignored them totally which was
a bit odd as one of the girls spoke french and was our
translator - she had to say something and one of the lads would
have to repeat it (badly) before a very good and wanting to be
helpful responce came - was all a bit fast show, though maybe it
was just because she was ginger? I suspect some of the
'protection' was so they could try and get some money off us,
the farm tried it a bit. That wasn't the polices game but from
their point on the whole we probubly provided some form of
interest and entertainment for them in a rather quiet area, and
also if something happened to 20 odd british cavers on their
patch they would be in for a hard time so it was worth them
being prominant, wether it was their initiative or an order from
above (there was certainly a paper trail that we were there) I
don't know but they took looking after us quite sereously in a
nice way. On the whole there wasn't a problem with them being
there, they also spoke very good english and at times were quite
helpful. Its a good job however that we declined the offer to
buy some drugs off someone rather eraticly driving a slightly
rough and badly modified BMW E36 (so the stereotype is clearly
global) trying to deal out the window whilst driving on the
wrong side of a quite narrow and very windy road dodgeing
oncoming mercs. The joys of the road, You just never quite know
whats gonna happen!

Glen, is it a 5brg unit? If so, is it metric or Imperial? I only
ask as I am gathering parts to convert boingy blocks to Series
usage, and need various castings, bolts etc...

Just plain brilliant. Well done you. As an old fart I can assure
you , you will never forget any of it!You do of course know, as
a young group you should really be on a "Play Station".
