conversion conversation

i'm running a 2a with a transit di and am struggling to see why
the new vogue is for a 200tdi or 200 di for cheaper insurance.Ii
mean i understand the want to keep the engine a land rover. But
the 200 tdi in my engineering eye's is not a better conversion
than a transit td with an intercooler and the 200 di just seem
daft compared to a transit di. And for one simple reason the
inlet and exhaust are on the same side of the block and to any
engineer this is the ultimate compromise. its just not worth it
for the savings in dimension u compromise hp and fuel
consumption and cause this has become the norm the di parts are
becoming rare and conversion parts non existent which is a real
shame cause apart from the extra effort sourcing the parts its a
great conversion and i personally wouldn't swap.

Horses for courses, had a prima in mine, that was good to, but a
200tdi is just that much better, it may not be the latest techno
engine but it was desigined to do a job and it's still doing it
well, apart from the head itself as fas as I know you can get
everything for it.
So to cap it off
Cheap, reliable, fits, works well and repairable, ticks all my
boxes.

One reason could be that non-Land-Rover engines aren't designed
and built for off-roading.
Land-Rovers are designed to operate in 500mm of water, with mud
all over, dust everywhere, tilted up/down/sideways at 30+
degrees, and in extemes of cold or heat. Enginers from lesser
vehicles are not designed to do these things, and sometimes will
have problems when put to the test.
I have various bits of anecdotal evidence for non-standard
engines causing problems. I think if you stick to engines
manufactured for use off-road then you're less likely to have
problems.
Of course, all these problems could be enginered out of any
engine conversion, but do you really want to work out how to
seal timing covers, and bell housings, put baffles in the sump
and extend the oil pick up on your conversion?

Used to have a transit di now running a 200tdi only swapped
because i broke the di and got a new galv chassis and didn't
want to cut and shut engine mounts.
Di was great got 39mpg out of it on a run but was really noisy
and didn't like water or mud. Starters died with depressing
frequency and alternators didn't last too long either.
200tdi was basically free, given that i broke a whole vehicle,
fits on standard mounts, has a landrover part number, means,
should i want to, i could trial her under arc auspices. Its also
a bit pokier and a lot quieter.
Having had both, in the same vehicle, would i go back? No
chance!
Would i pull a perfectly good di out and swap it for a tdi? Mmmm
probably not unless i was doing a lot of driving in mud and
water.

I stated to read the OP and lost the will to live.
'Wrongy': Listen, this is not your average idiot LR forum,
you'll have to be articulate, it's a must. Write like that, and
if the others don't rag you, I'm the caustic-cunt on here, so I
will.
However, if you can be, articulate you'll find a rich seam.
You appear to have the writing age of a 12 year old, so keep
sentences down to ten words or less, and for fucks sake use a
capital and a period. For the moment, I think you should leave
complicated commas alone.
OK, start by writng that again.
Carry on.

Proof reading helps too.

As the others have said,
Straight fit - no need to buy or make a conversion kit
Parts all standard Lr so easily available
More power, about the same economy
More readily available engine
Free conversion if you break the disco it came from
Better suited to ff roading use (power/torque band) and water
proof
Quieter/smoother engine
All round its just a better engine

Bollocks
there is no benefit to having a cross flow head on a diesel.
On a high speed petrol engine there is due to the volume of gas
oyu need to shift, and you can get better flowing ports with a
cross flow.
With a Di diesel like the TDi the ports are intentionaly not
smoth and straight to generate the require charge motion, to mix
the fuel and air. Whether you have a cross flow head or not you
still need to make the ports to do this - therefore no beenfit.
There is no such thing as an untilmate compromise. Engineering
is a ciompromise, thats life. Good engineering is coming up with
the best compromise. In this case your statement would be true
of a motorbike engine running at 15k rpm, but for a big diesel
running at 3500rpm, its bollocks. (In fact a cross flow would be
a much bigger compromise with extra cost to design and make,
much worse packaging - to give the same output as a conventional
head)

More bollocks.
You seriously think the reason parts for a transit Di have
become hard to find is that people arent fitting them to Series
LR's
It has much more to do with the transits they power not being
common now and therefore people not wanting parts.
TDi parts arent readily available due to being in Series, its
because there are hunderds of thousands still on the road

"Fuckwit" - you might want to evaluate your own writing style
before slating others. I am no where near perfect but you have a
very weird use of commas and bad spelling just for a start.
I prefer a standard engine in my Landie for various reasons -
but if I did want to convert to a diesel a really good reason
not to go for the Transit Di is that I would not want my Landie
sounding like a transit!

Ahhh what you've done here is opened the age old why bother with
a land rover engine when there are much better alternative
engines out there....Land rover owners are a law unto themselves
andwill not take lightly any suggestion that the land rover
engine is rubbish...we fit all sorts of engines in our Scammells
cos the old petrol was a bit of a compromise and rather
unreliable......You can also have a good chat about the shoddy
welding and other design flaws without being abused or shot
down.....Got a fourtrak engine in my landy and it shits all over
a 200 tdi.... Don't ever try to stray from the packand just
agree its much simpler in the long run...

You've got a Fourtrack engine in yours? You never mentioned it
before... ::)
