What are these I have found in my sump!

Found these in my sump.
Been having some knocking noises like big ends from my 300TDI -
so took sump off to change shells but before I continue I need
to know what these are and where they are from, and if they
could be causing the knocking. (Coins for size comparison)

They look a bit like the caps that go on top of valve springs,
but I don't see how they could end up in the sump!

Just been on blower to a friend who thinks the same thing just
thinks they have somehow wound their way down there. Also been
advised that the knocking is likely to be the vac pump and not
the big ends... Ah well they got 150000 miles on them apparently
so il stick new ones in now im there.

Ditto ^^^^ as per my reply on FB. Normally end up there when a
numpty does their first tdi headgasket...

Do they fall down the oilways or something? I've not had the
pleasure of doing a TDi head gasket yet.

I've had two 200tdi's that have dropped them out while in use.
Both were under heavy load and revving well at the time.(having
a race home both towing banger cars). It causes quite a lout
tapping, could just be them (lack of) causing the noise. However
none of mine ended up on the sump. They all stayed in the rocker
box, I just fished em out and refitted them. I replaced with new
ones when they arrived.
