Re: The Heystee Mk2 Santana / Iveco massiff PS10 gay disc brake

Hmm...
What can I add to this without getting shot at :smilewide:
We have converted the Series Hybrid with Zeus Discs all round
and used the later Series III dual master brake system and a
Servo. Zeus suggests the use of a "brake force limiter" as used
in a Disco for the rear brakes to prevent luck up but we have
had no issues so far.

Good brakes are nice. We have here more and more people failing
their older vehicles on brakes as the test ramp for the MOT is
just too fussy to deal with the drum brake systems that can be,
at times, erratic.

As with any conversion, getting parts is to be taken into
account when selecting your system.
Stop shooting for the sake of shooting - accept certain
improvements can be made to a Series or just accept that it is
done.
We are very happy with the discs (and yes, it is serious money
although we were very lucky with our deal) as we are with the
powersteering, parabolics and Koni's to name a few.

In the nicest possible way, I must say I'm not happy with that.
More so if I'm looking at an 88 over a 109. They have entirely
difernt braking characteristics in terms of weight transfer and
thus force. Witness the different part number for the debender
MC, 90 or 110. I'm sure in every day situations what we see here
is an improvemnet. No Doubt about it. It will ahve better feel,
and stay in adjustment. Great, however, just because it fits
does not make it better when you really want it.
In very heavy braking when you really wnat to stop, you'll be
standing the thing on its end, and the force will move
accordingly. Zues and their recommendation takes account of
that. You need a GV (best) or a proportining valve (at least),
or you must be overbarked at the rear. As the force moves, so
should where it gets put. And fire in that you only have so much
available, you don't want much going rearwards. An 88 will
transfer even more to the front. (nothing to hold it down, see).
On mdern vehiles that is acheived by ABS. You at least need old
skool proportioning.
Equally if all you've done to increase what force you have
available via your ankle-muscle is to add a stock LR series 3
servo, I cast even more doubt. Add in the way the S3 MC
proportions that force, and I wonder even more. It is for drums.
I'm sure you have improved them, over badly set-up drums
definitely, but...
Now I know a fair bit about this having tried all this, I had
the Santana kit on the rear, and was forced to remove it. I even
got my video cmaera out to film what was happening under
'proper' braking. Whatever I did, I couldn't limit the rear
enough. Agreed I had he same size discs on the rear as the
front, all that was available in 2003, but he advantage at the
rear of discs is not braking ability.
I am not skilled enough a writer to knock this down to a few
words, and I've not got time now to write the full SP, but
there's more to brakes than making them fit. Dare I say, it's
one of the more complex issues in vehicle design, and where
you're modding them you're in that territory, and it the one
most easy to get wrong.
I'm afraid unless you can come abck to me with a seasoned &
reasoned argument, rather tahn it works fine, I'm about to put
you before the firing-squad. It does not stand scrutiny or pass
the laws of Physics. Whereas what Zues are saying does. Sorry
Gringo.

Obviously, you have a point and as with any conversion, you need
to know what you're doing.
Having been passed in 3 different countries through the various
state controlled MOT's, too many miles to remember and several
visits to brake testing stations have proofed that the
conversion can work very, very well.
But each to their own.

I'm sure as it stands, it'll pass any MOT, any countries legal
requirement too. I'm sure it looks good on brake-tester. But
that is not the point I was making. It might look too good on a
brake-tester.
I strongly recommend a Heystee servo, a early 90 MC and a GV.
You need to mimic as closley as you can the Debender set-up.
