Sympathetic MOT Tester in south Cumbria

Does anybody know of a sympathetic MOT testing place in South
Cumbria? One that won't poke jinxy too hard?
I used to know a man in Ely who would pass your classic (with a
long list of advisories) as long as you left a crate of fosters
and a cheese sandwich on the passengers seat.
Something similar would be ideal!

Why not just fix what you know needs doing and have fully legal
vehicle and save the crate of fosters and a cheese sandwich for
a celebratory meal when you get home.

Oh I intend to fix all the critical bits so its safe, but I've
often found that if you take something that looks in a bit of a
state to someone who doesn't regularly deal with classic motors
then you end up having many an argument over petty things. and
often things like:
"it should have Hazard lights, reversing lights and fogs"
Please correct me if I'm wrong, but its my understanding that if
the vehicle wasn't fitted with them at time of manufacture then
they don't need to be there for an MOT.
I just want someone who is used to having a bit of a wreck turn
up and not make an instant "Fail" judgment.

Appearances can be deceptive, my gertrude is not what you would
call visually appealling in the paint department. But the tester
commented that the engine sounded great and there were no
advisories. This is in complete contrast to the list of faults i
had to sort after the rebuild.
The owner of the test station had to service his bosses series 2
when he was an apprentice so he knows old landrovers. The other
2 testers have asked the odd question about controls, aI of
course obliged smiling saying it's a vaild question ;-)
When I first got a test cert I was asked to fit a bleeper of
visual flasher for the indicators because they did not auto
cancel. I was not sure that this was something that God had
intended when series 2 was new? but I obliged by fitting a
flashing amber bulb ( I still miss this regularly and don't
cancel them ::) ).
Funnily enough I have considered fitting a hazard unit and may
add it to the list of jobs I never get around to doin ::) But
the test does not require it. All lights fitted though have to
work?
Jim does this for a living so will confirm this?
Sorry no idea about the test stations though others who deny
living in Cockermouth :-\ on here might have a suggestions?

Sorry can't help. Garage I take...err. some of my land rovers to
is very thorough but really does know the rules and knows old
land rovers very well.
Crake valley motors. Genuine trustworthy garage.
My racer had been MOTd at holmrook as it was convenient and he
too knows the rule book and its application to older motors.
Will be going back there on Monday too. Always plenty of
classics taken there which I think shows a lot and they're spot
on too.

I must admit I,ve had some varying experiences with MOTs and
Landrovers.One had the thing on the ramp and proceeded to tell
me he hated old Landrovers and they should all be taken off the
road.I just told him to get the car off the ramp and I would go
elsewhere.His boss wasnt impressed when I told him and said I
was going to report his attitude to VOSA.The garage I go to now
the tester has a 2a himself as well as 90 and hes very fair even
doing little jobs free gratis whilst its up in the air.The first
time he saw the Champ he stood looking at the suspension shaking
his head as everytime he jacked it up it just extended even
more and put its wheels down all his blocks and it was still
touching the ramp.there was so little to test most of the 40
minutes was spent discussing what we like and disliked in both
vehicles.It will be MOT exempt from November so so worries
anymore/

When you say "sympathetic MOT tester" does this mean you are
looking for someone who, when he hands you the fail sheet, will
make you a cuppa, give you a hug and tell you not to worry about
it as it's only an old Land Rover and isn't the end of the
world? :confused:

I know theres two sides to this, either you just want an MoT, or
you actually want a safe roadworthy vehicle. Mines been to the
2, one did give me an MoT although he hated landrovers and even
put as an advisory notice "Vehicle chassis has undergone
extensive repair work" and the other where the tester put the
vehicle on the ramp then disappeared into the office for 45 mins
then came back with a test. Id rather have a roadworthy vehicle
so I know which I prefer. Just get it tested and fix whats
wrong. You will be better for it.

I really want someone who understands old vehicles. Although a
cuppa with bad news would soften the blow!
The problem is I've just moved into a new area, and have no idea
who's good, who's a cunt and who's incompetent.
I've got jinxy in bits at the moment and am fixing everything
thats needed for a roadworthy vehicle, but I want to take her to
someone who knows these motors, not some snotty kid who's used
to testing corsas. I just can't be arsed with the argument.
Plus if its someone who knows leafers then they will probably be
a good source to get things fixed when I don't have time.
