Stainless bolt sets

I'm currently search/buying bits for the upcoming rebuild, and
thought about changing all the bolts to stainless.
The advantages seemed obvious until I read this

These kits seem a popular upgrade, has anyone done this? are you
happy with it? or did it cause your leafer to crumble at an
alarming rate?

You should only use stainless fastenings for non critical, low
load items - like holding the bodywork on. Do not use them for
anything that is load bearing or critical. For example, don't
use them to hold your steering box to the chassis. The reason
being is that stainless is a lot weaker, having a lower tensile
strength and yield strength than the tensile steel found in
regular fixings.
I've use Stainless to hold various bits of bodywork on and it's
been fine thus far. I cut up pieces of rubber sheet to sandwich
between the dissimilar metals in an effort to stop them
reacting.

plenty of rubber washers and copper slip would slow it down but
the end result will be the same :popcorn:

Just be careful, I was going to do the same but have changed my
mind a bit, mainly due to the stories i have heared about
stainless reacting with the ally body panels, I know a few
stories of people coming back to inner wing fasteners for
example only to find a big white powdery hole with a stainless
bolt sitting in the middle.
My plan is to use standard bolts where the ally panels are and
stainless where it is steel on steel, and obviouls 8.8 high
tensile stuff for structural joints.

You need nickel plated stainless fasteners to prevent corrosion
of the ali. Talk to Alan Olner at Marque Restore in Coventry,
he's setting up a nickle plating tank to do just that.

Surely the nickel is still less reactive than the ally? Even if
it isn't as soon as it weathers off you'll be faced with the
same problem.

I would be inclined to gob everything in
grease/copperslip/whatever and just use standard fixings.

Don't go there would be my advice,
They do make life easy getting them undone, but the repairing
the aluminium panel is allot more work.
I have stainless in most of the bodywork on my 88, and the
pannels are turning to white powder around the bolts rather
quickly.
the other arguably more important issue Goose mentions is the
suitability of stainless to take the laods imposed. In allot of
places it will be ok, but if you dont know enough about the
subject to chose ... I advise stick to what LR intended.

I've had stainless in the past, not worth the bother of fixing
the ally. Sherdized, galv or plain steel is the way to go
slathered with Duralac.

Basically just use ordinary fasteners and use plenty of
coppaslip it works just as well in my opinion.
