fancy fitting an oil cooler to my series 3 that has a 19J in it
       :-?
anyone done it before ? any ideas on best way / parts needed /
       available ?
       over to you :smilewide:

Best bet would be to swap the oil filter housing for one from a
200TDi. That one will have the thermostat in so it will control
oil supply to/around the cooler as appropriate. Yours has blank
plugs that can be removed and oil pipe unions fitted, but
without the thermostat or a blanking plate (2p coin and a
spring) fitted where the thermostat should be, it won't work,
there will be no flow around the cooler, it will just be a big
loop of pressurised static oil that will just mean your oil
light takes longer to go out on startup.
I modified a non-cooler oil filter housing off a 12J in the way
mentioned above, 2p coin and spring, and it did work, but the
proper thermostat option is much better. You could probably
order all the parts to convert it from LR (it's the same
housing) but it will probably be cheaper to get the whole thing
       from a dead 200 TDi.
NOTE: 300 TDi one won't work, before you ask, has to be a 200,
of either flavour, disco or defender.

I've got an after market oil cooler with connectors (no pipes
unfortunately) which I bought for my old P38.
I'm going to stick with the 2.25D for the mo in mine so don't
       have much call for it.
Its packed at the mo, but give me a shout if you want to have a
       look once the moves done.

Alternatively you could get the whole shebang off an ex-military
2.25 petrol and wang that on, but that would include changing
the sump, I don't know if they are compatible (but I think they
probably are) would mean changing back to messy canister type
oil filters in stead of nice spin on ones though. :haha:
Otherwise an oil take off sandwich plate between your oil filter
and filter housing would plumb the cooler in nicely, with no
thermostatic control... go google the Mocal catalogue, then ebay
       the bits you want. :)

A TD should have an oil cooler, just like the Tdi as Nat
describes. Just get the whole lot off a scrap engine (I'm sure
someone on here will have one) and have some pipes made up to
fit the cooler of your choice. My local hydraulics dude made me
up the pipes for my remote filter for about £25.

I had been intending fitting an oil cooler to my 2.25P - there's
the original military capiliary tube temperature sender/manifold
bolted to the inner wing, and I thought it would be good to make
       use.
However I have been strongly advised not to do this, as it could
over cool the oil and ultimately starve bearings due to the oil
       being too thick.

Sounds like bollocks to me, all those FFRs managed alright in
civvy street when they weren't sitting stationary as radio
gensets so I'm sure yours would be fine too. That being said,
technology has improved and costs have come down so it would
make sense to fit a thermostatically controlled system as it's
       not financially unfeasible.

A 19J engine has an oil cooler as standard, so all the
       connectors should be there.
My headlights in grille S2 has it in front of the rad and does a
good job. Don't need to switch theblectric fan on even in
       traffic.
