Galv Bulkhead & Chassis advice plase

Firstly hello again, as ive not been on the forum for a while
due crappy stuff at work and stress at home.
However things have settled down now and dispite it all have
managed to hold on to my beloved series 2a. (the boingy had to
go, but strangly i don't miss her in the slightest)
I'm not getting ready to strip down and rebuild Jinxy (my diesel
2a) and as a starting point i'll deal with the rot.
I think the chassis is beyond repair as it seems to be mostly
welded up with bean tin, and the bulkhead is about the same. I'm
thinking of swapping the chassis for a new richards one and
sending the bulkhead to ashtree.
Can anybody give any advice about these two companies? has
anyone used them?
i went to the LRO show in peterbrough today and crawled around
at the series 2 club feeling jealous, but couldn't see a naked
Galv bulkhead anywhere. are the common? can you paint them? and
if so what paint?
I've had galv bits poweredcoated in the past with mixed results
Any advise? thanks in advance

I think with galvy bulkheads it's T-wash, etch-prime, high-build
prime (to get over the problem of galv being a rough surface);
then top coat of your choice (enamel, 2-pack, whatever) as you
would top coat any other panel.

Yes, I've used Richards Chassis - first rate. Yes, I've used
Ashtree - first rate too. Lyn at Ashtree is extremely helpful,
I've got a second bulkhead with him at the moment for the 88.
I've not painted my one ton bulkhead yet but am planning to go
the route Wooden is suggesting, the bulkhead will need a decent
coat of high build to get a surface smooth enough for gloss
paint, however once done it should outlast me.
My local Dulux decorators centre sells mordant solution (T-wash)

/>and that seems to work well. My advice is give the chassis a
really good scrub with traffic film remover (something with
sodium hydroxide in it) and a gentle scotchbrite pad first, any
greasy residue will stop the mordant solution working. Follow
the instructions then you should be able to prime.
The necessity to paint galved panels cannot be overstated, my
first attempt at painting the 88's chassis in 2006 wasn't great,
when i dropped the fuel tank I was disturbed how much the galv
had been attacked. It hadn't been compromised but I doubt it
would have taken much longer.

It all depends on if you can weld or not? If you can then why
don't you get the bulkhead blasted then weld it up yourself,
then take it to get galved yourself, saving yourself a few quid
at the same time.
I've heard mixed reviews of the Ashtree Bulkheads, some rave on
at how good they are, others expect a little bit more attention
to detail for the money that is being spent - After all it's not
as if they are new pattern bulkheads being dipped, all of
Ashtree's bulkheads AFAIK are old repaired ones. How much
repair has gone in is anybody's guess.
As for painting, I agree with Wooden's method of painting the
Galv:

Richards, most people have nothing but praise for them, I've
only heard of one complaint about there chassis, can't for the
life of me remember what the complaint was though!

I've known of a few chassis with issues (mostly very minor), but
in fairness to Richards, they are pretty good at getting stuff
sorted out pronto if you ring them up and explain what's gone
wrong.

I've got an Ashtree bulkhead on my 80", the work done is good
(better than I could manage), it did need some 'persuading' to
fit due to slight warpage but nothing to worry about. I left
mine out in the open for a few months to weather and then
painted it with an etch primer and green top coat. I also filled
the thing with cavity wax. No issues so far touch wood.
My pal Jim also has an Ashtree on his 86 and has left it bare
galv, I'm not sure this is a good idea - after the winter we'll
see what happens to it :o

I have a Richards chassis for my 109, they are an excellent
company, and I'm in discussions with them about forthcoming 88
and 1-ton chassis'.
I saw Ashtree at Stoneleigh, I wasn't as impressed with the
quailty of the welding on the bulkheads I saw there, especially
the overplating instead of cutting out. considering the cost of
a new footwell, I was surprised they'd bothered a half-arsed
repair.
