Hi chaps,
I'm Lew, bought my dear old 1975 Series III aged 13 around six
years ago to the day. I got her for a steal, an indicated 30k,
no clue as to whether this is genuine or not, brand new tyres
all round, kept in a barn most of its life, and all with a
chassis that'd never been welded.
When I got her she was put in the shed as a bit of an investment
for a rainy day. We rent buildings on a farm for some of our
other vehicles so the farmer used to let me hack about round the
fields, great fun! The previous owner's mechanic had made a real
botch job of beginning to replace brake pipes so I had to undo
all of his work first then start again. For a long time there
had been a hole in the rear crossmember but this was left as it
wasn't on the list of priorities. Having passed my test for a
couple of years now I recently started getting her ready for an
MOT, having to have a fiddle with the brakes again as they kept
sticking on. Side lights and headlamp connectors needed some
attention, and finally I got round to the crossmember. In a
moment of lunacy I decided to cut out the rot and repair what
was there :eek:

I cut out templates in card and marked my angles, a local
engineering company wanted £40 to cut and fold the pieces for
me. Sod that, so I raided their scrap bin and set about making
the pieces myself. Here is the end result, in some places three
times thicker than the original leg.

I hope to take her for an MOT in the spring, no point now with
the winter months approaching and the extortionate tax to
contend with

Hi, good repair and glad another leafer is going to be used,

Thanks, have to say I do look forward to the snow every year!
Just out of interest can any of you recommend an insurer that
might do me a reasonable quote? I tried getting some help from
the NFU but unfortunately unless you have something else insured
with them they can only cover over 21 or over 25 on a classic
policy. Might try Flux to see what they can offer.
