One for the aircraft buffs

During my solo eurleafing trip this august (6 countries, 1585
miles). I decided to revisit a world war 2 wreck site, I last
was there 38 years ago in the LWB 2A, it was much the same
except for being fenced off and one of the gravestones
vandalised (thankfully repaired). This was a Lockheed Hudson
twin engined aircraft returning to England from a secret mission
in Germany, it never made it, being shot down in flames killing
all six crew, they were buried where it crashed, strangely the
W/o was from a town 4 miles from where I now live, anyway more

I wonder what on earth a Hudson was doing over Germany at that
stage in the war. " Secret Mission" - If I recall the Hudson was
not even armed ? Its the period after the Battle of the Bulge
but a few weeks before the Rhine was finally crossed.
Fascinating.
Edited to add.... Did a bit of electronic recce. The plane was
from 161 Sqn, Tempsford. Likely task was dropping or recovering
agents from occupied Europe. There is a picture of FO Escreet at

Not a good night for the Sqn, looks like they lost another
aircraft that day. RIP.

Not an aircraft anorak, although my late dad helped to build
Botha,s and latterly (for him) Beverleys, both at blackburn
aircraft, brough, yorks, I have seen a photo of a hudson with 2
nose machine guns and a top mounted turret with another 2 guns,
but maybe not all had them

Not an aircraft spotter either so I stand corrected. I'd still
like to know what they were up to that night. They are quite far
south to have been heading for Holland, Belgium would have been
"liberated" by then I think - There were British Troops in
Germany by Jan 45.

Thats what I find great about this site, the depth of knowledge
brought to the party, without your link that photo of Frankish
would never have surfaced, thanks, however I suppose we will
never know what they were up to, horrifying death when you think
your on your way home, the wood it sits in is peacefull now,
must have been hell on earth that night
