Well my local parts place git it today.
But it was the left hand thread version (I need the right hand
thread) and it was fully threaded.
So bugger, it's not going to be fixed in a hurry.
Looks like snail order now.

It dosn't unscrew but due to it not clamping up properly you can
have a tiny bit of movement between rod and ball
joint..over time this wear the thread and the trackrod end will
rip out of the rod. This is what happend and it resulted in a
head on colision....after a days trailing

Right, I'm making progress.
Went to Inverness this morning, my first visit to these guys
HTML http://www.davidsonandmcmillan.co.uk/index.php
Handy to have
them relatively close. Hopefully I have now found a decent
relatively local supplier of parts.
They had the drag link ball joint, though only the fully
threaded version, so that's what I have fitted. I take on board
the warnings and will keep an eye on it for signs of movement.
So new ball joint fitted, and now all steering joints are good
with no visible play in them.
So off for another run. Things are vastly better. She no
longer veers off when going from drive to over run, and steering
play is obviously a lot less.
But I would say it's still not perfect. On a bumpy single track
road near me, it's still hard work keeping on course at any
speed. I don't know if this is now me just expecting too much
from such an old design (compared to modern cars) or if there is
still something "wrong" I'm sure in due course a set of new
matching radial tyres would make an improvement.
One thing I noted, I set the drag link to the specified centre
to centre distance in the WS manual. Now the steering wheel is
nearly 90 degrees off centre. So I guess the last guy hadn't set
the drag link dimensions properly. I'll just go and re centre
the wheel.
One last question, what sort of tyre pressure should I be
running at? They are all at 32psi at the moment, which sounds a
bit low, especially as the crossplies say maximum load 2440lbs
at 60 psi.

Tyre pressures sound a bit high to me. Mine are at 25psi all
round.

I run mine at 40/45F and 50R. Seems ok to me.....

You need to set the steeing box in the center by counting the
turns. then fit the wheel in the correct position. Then adjust
the box to relay rod and relay arm to get the relay top arm in
the correct position, Then adjust the drag link to get the
wheels straight. Tiny adustment of the drag link finaly to
center your wheel nicely. the steering ratio changes near the
end of each lock. Also it is very important that the steering
locks out on the axle lock stops before the steering box runs
out of travel or you may smash the steering box while off road
at full lock. In fact bouncing up a curb could damage a badly
set up box. Also get the right track rod end soon as you can.
Not for your sake but for the school run mum with the car full

Are you realy being so stupid
What you are doing, is simply dangerous - have some
consideration for the safety of other road users and fit the
correct parts, and if you will not maintain your vehicle in a
safe condition then get the work done by someone who will
how do you intend to keep an eye on it, the only way to know the
condition of the thread is to inspect it - and how are you
intending to decide what is ok
you will find out it was weakended at the point it fails -
probbaly when its most needed with allot of load on the steering
The correct parts arent hard to get, and if for some reason you
realy want a fully threaded joint then fit the matching rods (if
you have a S1 or S2 with pendany joints, you are stuffed and
will have to fit the proper ball joint)
Which manual did you take the measurements from, and did you use
the imperial or metric ones. Some manuals have the measurements
printed wrong as the unit conversion has been messed up, so if
you have used those numbers it will now be wrong

You will all be glad to know I've ordered the correct ball joint
by mail order. So my use of the wrong one will be short lived.
My dilemma is that my wife's car is off the road, so she's using
my normal car, so Mr Noisy, that should just be my fun car is
having to be used for my daily transport until wifes car is
fixed. So I had to do something to get it ready for Monday
morning, and I'm sure you will all agree, a new, but technically
wrong ball joint was safer than to carry on driving having
discovered a HUGE amount of play in the existing ball joint.
Re drag link initial settings, I'm using the Series 3 workshop
manual that I downloaded that gives the initial centre to centre
distance of 782.62 to 785.99mm or 30.812 to 30.937 inches, which
seem to agree. I measured the centre to centre distance before
removing the failed ball joint at just over 800mm so it was
clearly wrong.
I also agree, that having found this aspect of the steering
setup wrong, I should check ALL the steering setup as I have
just about lost all confidence in the previous owner that
rebuilt the car on it's new chassis.
I'm still mystified by tyre pressure. I don't know whether to
be letting air out, or putting more in. Unfortunately I don't
have the luxury of time to just experiment, I need some guidance
on what to do for tomorrow's journey to work.
Thanks.

I run 26 front and 30 rear on my 88 ...radial.
crossplys want to be lower I would guess
I think its one of the reprints of the S2 manual that is wrong
