Thanks for that. Odd that they don't actually say "radial" on
them anywhere then?
So that explains it, I have a dangerous (and illegal)
combination.
So a short term fix then is to swap them over front to rear to
get the radials on the back, and make it legal, then when i'm
feeling a bit more flush, get another pair or radials.
This is how it was when I bought the car a few months ago. It
came with an MOT. So the MOT tester was either blind, or the
tyres have been swapped around since the last MOT.

All this talk of massive quantities of oversteer has me thinking
about hunting out a set of crossplies for the rear of the racer
for doing autotests etc. >rcker<
Here's me with an ATB rear diff, back springs like RSJ's and
front's like tin foil and there's still not enough sideways
action!
That said it can't have carry some speed through the bends!

An update:
Tyres swapped over. Crossplies on the front and radials on the
rear.
I did the same journey again on the same road today. This
morning in heavy rain, and on the way home it was mostly dry.
There IS an improvement. Now there's not much difference
between wet and dry conditions.
BUT it's still not right. So I think I'm chasing a fault as
well.
On that particular hilly, bumpy, rough old road, she's still all
over the place.
Now bear in mind I haven't long had this car and I'm still
getting used to it. But I'm forming the opinion it's not right.
The thing that makes me think that, is even on a nice smooth
good road, if you ease off the gas and go from drive to over
run, the car will veer to the left, requiring a steering
correction to the right to keep it on course.
So it sounds to me like something is loose, and since drive to
over run triggers it, I'm thinking it's something on the rear
axle.
So what do I check? I recall reading a similar problem on here
and it was one of the big U bolts holding the axle to the leaf
springs had snapped. Well a quick look shows all mine are
intact so it's not as obvious as that.
So I think I have some spare time tomorrow so I want to get
under and have a look. I assume I'll need a crowbar or
something similar to check for play in the leaf spring bushes
etc.
What pointers can you give for what to check?

The first check I'd make is that all the U bolts are tight,
front and back axle.
Go round with a spanner, and nip them up; don't just feel them.

Worth checking the bushes as you say, also how much play is
there between turning the steering wheel and the road wheels
actually moving? The car may be self steering on occasion!
My own opinion is that tyres are up there next to steering and
brakes as the things on any car that MUST be in good shape. They
are the only means of keeping you on the road so fit decent
ones! The police will take an interest in mismatched tyres if
there is any sort of incident involving the car.
Getting good radials at least as matched axle pairs will be a
good start, make sure the pressures are correct as well -
sometimes I run a couple of PSI under the book value with my
LR's because the feel is not right and grip is better with them
a little softer.

Look for broken main leaf on rear springs in front of the axle,
Also check that the u blots holding the axle to the spring are
tight. There is a peg on the spring that locates in a hole under
the axle, this has been known to brake off ect. You might see
evedence of movement where the axle sits on the spring...a shiny
or red rusty stain...

Id be putting a wanted add in the classifieds for 2 radials,
somebody will have a couple of spares going cheap and it seems
you NEED them.
Does sound like something is loose, also have a good look at the
big things like the chassis and spring hangers for cracks or
dammage.

Dave, I've just emailed you but I thought I'd put this here too.
I've got a couple of Avon Rangemasters which I've got no use
for. They're 7.50R 16 and have some life left in them. Buy me a
couple of pints and they're yours.
