Pros
-----
1. An electric fan might marginally increase available engine
power and/or reduce fuel consumption as the engine doesn't have
to generate power to spin the fan except when it's hot.
2. The engine might warm up a little quicker as the fan doesn't
waft cold air over it when it's already cold.
Cons
------
1. The stupid thermostat that you sneak into the top hose where
it joins the radiator pretty much always leeks. A better
solution is to cut the top hose in half and put in an
aftermarket in-line thermostat which I believe you can get from
places like RS Catalogue.
2. The Kenlowe fixings that go through the radiator will knacker
anything but a brand new radiator. You are better off using
brackets that don't mount through the radiator.
3. If the fan doesn't work for some reason, then you risk
cooking your engine.
I'm not a fan (!) of electric fans. The original mechanical fan
is simple and reliable.
Cheers
James

no where near as powerful as a viscous unit, so not up to it if
you do heavy towing.

Never had a problem with the Kenlowe on my Triumph Vitesse, but
can't see why you'd buy that particular make for a Landy.
You're paying over the odds for a fan that's shallow, which is
only necessary where space is tight.
Instead, I fitted a Spal electric fan to my SIII with the
Perkins 4.203. This has loads of power and keeps up with the
heaviest towing yet only cost £40.
It sits in front of the radiator, does its job, probably saves
me drop or two of diesel and doesn't cool the engine when it's
already cold. I'm in favour.

In that case, flog it on eBay, buy a cheaper alternative and
pocket the profit!

Many moons ago I spoke to a very well known Land Rover engine
remanufacturer and he told me he loved electric cooling fans -
they sent a lot of business his way. I took that on board and
I've stuck with the fan as Solihull intended on all of mine.
It's cheap and effective with a fail safe warning device - if
the belt snaps the charge light comes on!

True - but nothing a bit of silicone won't cure - I have done
about 17,000 miles with my kenlowe thermostat (I have not got a
Kenlowe fan but something else) and has always been fine.

Not sure of your logic...with or without the standard fan you
are still going to have the belt on the pulley. The fan is
bolted to the water pump - not driven by a belt.

I've got a leccy fan on KWD. I think it's a lot better for my
usage. Means the engine warms up much quicker, and is quieter
and hopefully uses a touch less fuel.
These engines are somewhat overcooled anyway, my fan comes on
about twice per year, usually when sat in traffic for ages on a
hot day.
