       80" speedo problems.

The speedo in my 80" has stopped working. At first I presumed it
was a broken cable, but I soon realised it is still counting
miles so the cable must be ok. Now, there is no mechanical
connection between the input drive and the needle so I can't see
why it would stop working suddenly? Is it possible that the
magnets have lost their magic and need remagnitising? Has anyone
had any success with repairing them? It has the original 2 1/4"
       gauge.

When I got mine the speedo worked ok then the same thing
happend, miles went round but no speed reading, then after a bit
that packed up too. I sent it away to a specialist and it came
back great, they even cleaned it up, that was about ten years
ago since then it stopped working again, but I think its the
       cable this time :-?.

Um, ok. It's working today!? Maybe it just had a funny five
minutes, although it's probably on the way out. I'll see what
       happens. ???

Is it feasible to repair a speedo - well, the
       mileometer/odometer bit?
Mine shows the speed with no trouble, but hasn't been clocking
       up any mileage...
It'll be interesting how my insurers react when I declare the
mileage at next renewal, as I'm on a limited mileage policy!

Mike - if you're still having trouble, pm Rick O'shea on the
series one club forum. He sorted mine out for me for next to
nothing, he's a clock maker so knows his shit when it comes to
little fiddly things. Apparently they corrode a little an it
stops it all moving about properly.
Having said that, my speedo's not actually been connected at any
point since it's been on the road...

That's what it was in the end, the needle was just stuck. A bit
of a clean up and it's right on.

Very much so, sounds like the gear that mates to the worm drive
(on the other end of the shaft to the excentric cam that holds
the paw that pushes the dials round) has probubly stripped its
teath, probubly because the shaft has seazed (or sometimes the
gear itself splits and jams, sometimes the cable snaps,
sometimes the plastic gear strips its teath). Had it happen to
one of my clocks earlyer this year.
To be honest unless its one of the rarer clocks with a trip
counter I'd just swap it as you'll need a donor clock of the
same ratio for the gear wheel. Wanting to keep the original
clock for mileage is also a reason for fixing it but if its been
broken for a while you won't have the original mileage anway,
its pritty easy to clock the odometer to what you want anyway
once your in there so eather clock would do for that.
To fix, swap out the shaft with broken gear with another one
from a clock with the same 4 numbers on the front as it will
have the same teeth, number of teeth depends on how big your
tyres are, usally 47t for 6.00 and 44t for 7.50. Use antiscuff
paste when reasembleing and it shouldn't seaze again. The clock
comes apart by undoing the bezel, remove the glass and inner
rim, then undo the two big screws on the back of the clock (not
the little ones on the face) and carefully push the cable
fitting in/lift the face out so the whole middle comes out of
the caseing, the paw drive will be easy to get to - getting the
bezel to turn is the hardest bit!
