Brass bush causing juddering clutch?

evening all,
I have a gearbox issue which is making some funny noises
especially on overun, as the mainshaft seems to move forward and
back when driven in gear :confused:
So gearbox out and strip down required. Whilst the gearbox is
out I want to sort out the juddering clutch, as Im fed up of
looking like a learner driver kangarooing everywhere. Although
the clutch is not worn I will replace the clutch with a non blue
box one, but I have been told that there is a brass bush at the
rear of the flywheel that will require replacing as once the
brass wears it can cause the juddering. Has anyone heard of
this? or is someone taking the piss :haha:

There is a bush.
I think it very unlikely it would cause clutch juddering, Im not
even sure it could, >tnking< if it were worn as the clutch is
released it would have to allow the mainshaft to move enough to
take the slack on the clutch plate splines and then enough to
distort the clutch plate
- more likely is oil contamination

I always found a leafer most likely to judder in 1st if it is
going to. When talking of cars in general as far as I know,
juddering suggests wear but as you say it's not old the clutch?
Could the linkage be worn?

Its often down to the plate sticking on the shaft a little.

The bush is known as the, 'first motion shaft bush' or 'spigot
shaft bush', and it probably has other names as well.
It's job is to support the front end of said shaft (that sticks
out the front of the gearbox) and keep everything nicely
concentric. If it is worn out-ie no longer has a circular hole
or has a larger hole than when virginal-the shaft can run
eccentric and this can indeed lead to judder. If it runs dry it
can give rise to an horrendous shriek as the clutch is taken up.
Rather than brass it is, I believe, phosphor bronze, or sintered
bronze. This material takes up lubricant before the bush is
inserted into the crank.

Have you tried tightening the mainshaft nut up before you strip
the box down.....Fucked engine or gearbox mounts can cause
judder as will a sticky handbrake..

i had major clutch judder....the middle of the clutch was loose
so fitted a new one even though the old clutch had loads of life
left.

It's also worth checking that the handbrake return spring hasn't
broken or come adrift. It could save a gearbox removal!

Thanks for the replies chaps. Will be removing the gearbox at
the weekend so will inspect the gearbox shaft and the bronze
spigot bush. How do i remove this bronze bush from the flywheel?
has it been pressed in and will it tap out like a bearing? The
clutch plate is not worn as I only finished rebuilding the landy
a couple of months ago so gearbox mounts, springs etc are all
good (although clutch plate was used but in good nick) also the
juddering is a lot worse in reverse for some odd reason
:confused:
Anyhoot, once I've given the clutch etc a good check over Im
going to change the gearbox for a spare one i have laying around
(fingers crossed its ok) whilst I rebuild this one. The
mainshaft nut is wobbly, although the tabs are bent over, and
there is severe play (up,down and side to side) in the rear
output bearing and the box howls'n'growls like a goodun. Now
wishing I had rebuilt the gearbox at the time of rebuild but
funds were restricted, now with restricted funds still, it looks
like forking out for parts/bearings in gearbox and new clutch
