Fred - the 109

Something about my motor.
A 1981 109 that was originally a 2.25 petrol.
It got given to us by a mate after the engine ate itself. Some
work got done to it back in January 2008, new springs were
fitted, the hard top was swapped for a truck cab and a few other
bits and pieces were done.

It was at this point it was realised that the chassis was shot
and it ideally needed to be replaced. Unfortunately a massive
amount CBA set in and nothing was done other than finding a
chassis (from Ben the OLLR saint)

Of late, Fred (as the 109 has been named) has been trailered
back to my gaff ready for me to crack on. Project 88 got in the
way a bit but now I have free space and free time.
I have gone unquestionably :gay: with my choice of engine
>embrsd< It's out of a Nissan and is a 3.5 litre 4 pot diesel.
It'll be bolted to a 5 speed R380 with a converted 2/4wd
debender transfer box - hopefully it may survive under my lead
right boot :rolleye0012:
I got started on things yesterday and pulled the wings and front
axle off.

Hoping to get some more done on Friday as I have a day off. More
likely to be more stripping and painting.

I had a rest day today so planned some fettling.
Unfortunately it's piddled down for most of the day so I have
been confined to shed.
Confined to shed=painting
Lots of work with the wire wheel cleaning stuff up (after
spending too much time sorting out the chaos in the shed), lots
of time with brush and aerosol and I have lots of shiny things
now :smilewide:

Axle case has now had 2 coats of rustoleum, the brake drums have
been blown over with some high temp BBQ paint.

I've checked the diff over and it looks to be OK so a coat of
paint on the case.

The swivels are 'new'. I want to strip the hubs down completely,
rebuild with new parts where necessary and lob some paint over
them too. Gaiters will be fitted to try and prolong the life of
the chrome.

The front shocks got another waft of satin black

And a bit of brush work on the shock mounting plates.

I've been in the shed again today.
One swivel is now completely stripped down, the case is painted,
checked over the bearings which look as though they were
replaced just before the donor was laid up.
The brake backplates are also in very good nick as are the brake
cylinders but the brake adjusters are seized solid - why would
you spend a load of cash on Lucas brake cylinders and doing a
load of work rebuilding the hubs then not put a bit of copper
grease on to stop the adjusters seizing up?
Painted up the mudshields too. I will have to replace the
steering box cover as it is more rot than owt else.
If I CBA I'll take some more pictures but do you really want to
see more painted stuff?
