PTOs

Probably a daft question; but am I correct in thinking that you
can't use a bottom pto to drive a rear pto mechanical-drive
because the bottom pto is not aligned to the holes through the
cross-members?
Therefore to use a rear pto mechanical-drive a rear pto is
required from the transfer case (thus loosing the over drive).
So if you had a pto winch and wanted a rear pto belt pulley, the
winch would need to come off a bottom pto, and the rear pto
mechanical-drive would have to come off the rear pto on the
transfer case?

doesnt a bottom pto go into the same hole as the rear pto & just
drop down to allow the shaft under?
surely a better way would be to have the front winch driven off
the crank pully & the rear belt drive off the pto?

The bottom pto is slung under the transfer case, and is a
different pto than the one from the back of the transfer case
that an over drive would fit into, so the prop-shaft would, I
guess, foul the cross member.
I guess I just would like to know if you can run a rear
belt-pulley driven from the transfer-case bottom-pto, and then
have an over drive in place as well.

Good luck with finding a bottom PTO... I'd worry about that
before trying to work out what to do with it once you've got it.
There are drop PTO's out there, which take the drive from the
normal (overdrive) take off point, but which put the output down
under the gearbox. They are usually used to drive mechanical
drum winches on the front of motors, and are far more common - I
would think one on it's own is probably only worth about £100

Nope. The bottom transfer-box PTO is wellout of line with the
rear PTO setup.
The bottom PTO can be found in mechanical or hydraulic version.
Both hav etheir output underneath the OD hole/PTO hole.
I do have both in my SWB: a rear PTO running a PTO gearbox on th
erear crossmember and a hydraulic bottom PTO (running nothing at
present).
If you want an OD AND a rear pulley you need to think of some
other gears inside your Transfer box. I think Ashcroft offers a
higher geared High-Range set for road use which still offers the
same low - gears.

Thanks TrueS2, that's confirmed what I suspected. I think it'll
be easier to just have a rear pto pulley and no o/d, which is
fine for me really. The Land Rover is a 2.25d which is probably
not suited to the Ashcroft high ratio box.
BPTOs are out there John, it wasn't that long ago that
Blanchard's had some, and I know of two available at the moment.
You just have to be prepared to pay through the nose for it.
Thankfully, I won't need one.

A series drop box pto for a fairey drum winch has all the
fixings minus the drive flange the same as the straight PTO. So
if you take the front winch out of drive on the dog clutch you
could use the PTO with a drive flange out of the back.

I think a few years ago, Simon (Maltelec) was looking at trying
to modify an o/d so you could run a pto off the back of it. Not
sure he got anywhere with it though.

That actually reminds me that I one of my Overdrives has splines
on the rear gear, so if you remove the rear cover you could make
something to attach to those splines and link it up to a dog
clutch or something. Only thing is, how on earth you get it
around the crossmember as an overdrive doesn't leave much spare
room to play with!
