Rear layshaft bearing

Any tips/tricks for getting the rear layshaft bearing out of the
casing?
I've tried filling it with grease and hydraulicing it out, but
there's a hole in teh back of the casing so that didn't work

warm the case with a hot air gun/blowtorch, then use a drift to
through the afore mentioned hole to knock it out.

this pic shows the hole in the casing (bottom centre, left of
reverse shaft hole) through which you can punch out the bearing
race - although i seem to recall not all were pre-drilled and
you may have to drill yours, carefully :eek:

I'll have another look when I CBA. I want to get the old one out
of the spare case I have so I can take it to a bearing place to
find a replacement

If the case is empty, turn it aroung and have hott boiling water
run over it from the backside.
This will loosen the bearing race enough to fall out by itself.
Did that several times.

I did mine just last week. My gearbox (late 2a box) doesn't
have a hole on the back, but I got it out by standing the
gearbox on it's end and heating the back gently with a plumbers
blow torch, until it was just about too hot to touch. Then a
couple of blows on the back of the gearbox case with a soft
mallet and the race fell out.
The previous time I rebuilt a gearbox, I took it to my local
independent land rover place who hydrauliced it out. The method
the 2a workshop manual says to use is to heat it up and put a
mandrel into the centre of the race and then let it cool so that
the race contracts onto the mandrel and can then be pulled out,
but that sounds a bit shit to me.
I'd try the heating up the back of the gearbox case trick first,
that worked really well on mine - just don't melt it! ;D

If it's a series 3 case, then it should have two round holes
through the back - get a decent blunt ended round drift and tap
it down between the holes, and it's a bit of cake.
If it's a series 2 case, they don't have the holes. I've tried
heating the case (I did NOG's the other week) to no avail - I've
heated gently, and rapidly, and not very much, and so hot the
case was starting to melt, and none of it did me any good.
My solution was to drill two holes (about 8mm dia) where they
are drilled on the series 3 case (I did have a series 3 main box
handy to measure from), and then punch them out - took me about
ten minuites to do (after previously having spent all evening
burning my arms trying to reach inside a red hot gearbox to
attempt pry out the bearing, after the inital "warm up and tap"
approach appeared to fail)

I have used them both before, when the local place didn't have
the sizes I needed, have had no bother with them.
Failing that I have a little program given to me as a freebie
from a well known high quality bearing manufacturer that may be
useful.

There's a few bearing places around here I can try, if I get
really desperate one is next to a landover parts place so I
could go there and get one. (don't really want to fit one from a
blue box though.)
