Radiation burn!!!

No, I've not been swimming in the sea near Sellafield or
anything that daft, but why, oh why, oh why, do I always forget
to put a welding gauntlet on my left hand when welding ::)
Yet again, I've woken up this morning with the back of my left
hand sore and red after spending several hours yesterday
replacing sections and bad patches on a bare chassis I promised
to repair for someone :-[
Of course, my right hand is fine as that's the one I hold the
torch in!
It'll start peeling in a few days as well - luverley :(

I do it a few times a week. That and burning one side of my face
where i turn my head when tacking. You'd have thought after 10
years of doing it for a living I'd have learnt by now. ::)

Also wear something reasonably fire resistant; it's hard to get
a flaming fleece off when you've got your
head up inside a wheel arch... as I learnt :o

This is the one thing that you will never learn from!
No matter how long you've been doing it (10years myself) you
still tack things with no screen and end up bright red and
crispy.
Top tip:- If your trying to hold things and tack stuff
together and trying to see through a screen covered in spatter
or it all moves when you flick your head to get the mask down,
Get yourself a full face clear visor instead of blind tacking.
The rays won't go through the clear screen and so your face
doesn't fall off a week later and there's no chance of arc eye!.
You still need to close your eyes 'tho 'cos it's bright
obviously and it does nothing to protect your hand but there you
go.

I'm 53 and I still do it. You'll never learn. In fact, I've
learned to weld short bits without a mask and with just eyes
shut.... Then wait for my eye lids to peel... :D

i still set fire to meself but after ten or more years in a
welding bay i've learnt to cover up, used to let the radiation
and spatter kill me T shirts and carry on using them 8 or 9
years later and i've finally stopped itching and peeling in the
middle of me chest, carried that sun tan for a long time
i've suffered arc eye a couple of times and i don't like it (got
it mildly a couple of times just from others welding 15foot or
so away from me as well) so i've been the proud owner of a
reactive mask for ten years or more and it's one of the tools i
look after most carefully, even if i'm only tacking i'm wearing
it

Done the same thing loads of times myself
now if my daughter see's me welding bart mask she gives me a
polite telling off??
so i allways end up red faced one way or another?

I usually, if welding underneath something end up with splatter
going in my ear, I've been looking for a chubby brown helmet for
ages.

Hopefully JE will see this, he went suntanning with my plasma
and some welding goggles ;D
