       November 13 2010
Well Phatty has stood all summer while we got married, moved
house again and did the usual run of steam rallies and playing
with the engines. The season's over now bar a few steam ups for
our own pleasure so, spurred on by teh_skoze and landyboy today
       I've made some progress.
First job was to clean up the fuel tank landyboy gave me and
bolt it in. Its had some tank sealer sloshed around in it so
       hopefully will be OK.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_2950.jpg
Back in June Fen Tiger came round and wired my new loom up to
the dashboard, so now the ignition is on the key and lights come
on and that. I'm about done in here except I've lost the friggin
throttle pedal!! I was so careful bagging and labelling
everything that I took off the old bulkhead, but the whole
assembly including the little 'box' the pedal hinges in has gone
AWOL. Need to sort that out really. :-(
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_2944.jpg
Next I got fed up with the wings flapping about every time I
leant on them - I'd just sat them on to keep the weather out. So
I got some taps and cleaned up all the holes on the bulkhead and
bolted everything up with nice new bolts. It's now all rock
solid and everything seems to have gone back where it was
originally. Very satisfying! Wish my 88 was this solid at the
       front

After a pleasant visit from the Gadgets (nice to see you) I
decided to put the 80 away in it's hole and fetched the tractor.

Little bit more done. She's in the shed now to do the dumbirons
which I've been putting off for ages. I should have done them
when it was in bits but time and circumstances were against me
       but never mind.

       March 8 2011
       I've broken it!! :-(
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_3510.jpg
Moving it out on Saturday morning, there was a horrible crunch
and the steering box let go! Luckily it was in the yard and not
on the road. These late 2 litre 80s have an alloy steering box
and they are notorious for cracking where the column is riveted
to the box. Mine split here and the worm climbed up and out of
       the box...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_3515.jpg
This was a MAJA set back, as I know from a pal's experience that
these boxes are expensive to replace. Frantic interweb enquiries
reveal early 80s have a cast steel box which is much stronger
and a preferred choice; indeed some folks change them as a
matter of course! A later 86/88 or S2 box requires a lot of
cutting and bulkhead surgery. While bemoaning myself on
Facebook, a chap offered a good steel box in part exchange for a
good S2 box, so fingers crossed I'm sorted. :-|
In other news the dumbirons are here and the removal of the
front end (easier to remove the new-nut-and-bolted complete
front, rather than one wing) to gain easy access to the steering
box disaster zone will aid plasma cutting the old ones off.

  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_3528.jpg
You may recall I lost the throttle assembly including the cast
housing for the pedal. After a fruitless search for replacement
bits and much procrastination, I found myself in John Craddocks
one day where they have said throttle parts in a special glass
case. "Fuck it" I thought and bought one along with a new pedal
which is nicely OMG NEW OLD STOCK
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_3533.jpg
I've also fixed the gear lever, when I was farting around test
fitting the bulkhead all those months ago, I snapped the pin
that holds the stick in position. A bit of digging in the engine
shed and I found a grub screw to do the trick.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_3525.jpg
Finished the floor by tapping out the captive nuts and bolting
it all down nice and tight. Another one of those roundtuit jobs
       sorted.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_3521.jpg
My somewhat laughable target is May, with the idea of getting
some miles on it before setting off for Dover and the LTDS Swiss
       gig. Well why not!!
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_3522.jpg
That's all for now, the next update will be some HOT PLASMA
ACTION followed by some welding. I've got to the get the
radiator re-cored and order a few more bits, and a nice man from
the LRSOC is coming to see her and make sure she isn't a
Defender so I can get a new V5.
For now she's tucked up with the threshing drum as the engines
passed their cold tests yesterday so we'll be having them out
       for a steam up soon.

Been skint/busy/sloppy at posting pics but here's a couple of
snaps. Been doing bits and bobs here and there; sale of the 2a
put a bit of cash in the kitty so there's a box of fuel pipes,
various gaskets and new spring bolts etc ready to go on.

       Tonight's tinkering
Steering relay is a tad on the tight side to say the least,
probably didn't help the alloy steering box  I know
some people rebuild them, I CBA TBH and my mate Paul offered to
get me one (non Britpart!) as a early birthday pressie so job's
       a goodun.
It was a bit tight, so I got a screw jack we lift the steam
engines with. Two turns and out it popped. :D

  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/P4110062.jpg
Put the new throttle pedal assembly together on the bench...
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/P4110064.jpg
... then realised it had to be put together in situ as it passes
through the bulkhead support  never mind, the holes in
the new casing and pedal needed easing out a bit anyway.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/P4110067.jpg
Three pedals for the first time in ages...!!
Then I stripped the drag link apart for new TREs and a check
over, been off the road for a long time and I want to make sure
they aren't rotted through. Will give it a lick of black and put
       the newuns in tomorrow.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/P4110069.jpg
Finally I bolted the "new" steel steering box in.

       April 16 2011
Photographic FAIL today, battery went flat on the camera, it was
too hot to really be bothered and was busy all day.
My friend and shed-landlord Brian welded on the dumbirons,
bloody superb job I am well chuffed.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/Photo-0055.jpg
New steering relay is in, rods hooked up with new TREs and she's
back on four wheels. :) MEGA
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/Photo-0056.jpg
While Brian did his welding magic, I lit the Ruston up to check
out some modifickationz and we had a good chuff around the yard,
so all in it was a pretty super day

Did a bit in the shed this afternoon so got some more pics.
  HTML http://i222.photobucket.com/albums/dd267/kevatwork/IMG_3588.jpg
Spent most of the afternoon farting around with the bumper.
Predictably it didn't fit the new dumbirons and I ended up
cutting it and making up some fishplates for the bottom. I also
fitted the A-frame brackets and the pin hitch it had when it was
working shunting caravans about. Bit more done!

Busy week ahead with early starts and potential CBAness by 6pm,
but I did a (tarty) little job to keep motivated. It's one of
those jobs I wanted to do but know once it's running it'll get
       left to the last minute.

And shunted it round to the skip for a good clear out.
